TO ALL WHOM-I'I MAY CONCERN:`
Be it known that I, HENRY B. BARBER, of Scott, in the county of Cortland, and in the State of New York, have invented ,certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and vdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactrdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the body of theehurn, which may be made half round, as represented, or inV any of the known and usual forms for upright ehurns. B represents a portion of the cover, which is stationary, and-B a movableportion ofv said cover. Secured upon the stationary portion of the cover is a metallic frame,v G, in which ashort shaft, H, has its bearings. This shaft is provided with a bevel-gear wheel, a, and with a plain plate-wheel, I, which is secured in an inclined position upon said shaft. P represents another frame, secured upon the portion B of the cover, and in which a shaft,
L, has its bearings. The shaft L has upon one end a crank, and upon the other a bevel-Wheel, K. which gears.
into the wheel a. To the upper end of an arm, d, of the frame G is pivoted, at its centre, a rocking-shaft or lever F. Depending from this lever F is an arm, J, and upon the arm, near its lower end, are two lugs, between which the rim of the wheel I plays. When the wheel I revolves with shaft H, it communicates a vibrating motion to arm J, which gives an oscillating motion to the rocking-lever F. To each end of the lever F is pivoted the upper end of a dasher-staff, C C, which extends down into the churn. These dasher-staffs are provided with cross-bars S S, portions of which are seen in iig. 2, and from these cross-bars project the arms D D. E represent vertical strips, secured to the inside of the churn.
When the shaft L is revolved, lby means of its handle, the wheel K gives motion to wheel a, which revolves the wheel I. This wheel revolving, causes the lever F, through its arm, J, to oscillate,. thus' giving an up-anddown or vertical motion to the dasher-staffs and their arms. The agitation of the milk or cream, by the arms D, causes the butter to be set free from it.
` Having thus fullyv described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The arrangement of the dasher-staifs C C and their arms, with the oscillating lever F, arm J, shaft H, with its inclined wheel I, and the bevel-Wheels a and K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 27th day of March, 1867.
HENRY B. BARBER.
