"IMPROVEMENT 1N GATES,

'0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN SHAB/rmi, of Lima, in the county of-LaGrange, and State of Indiana, haveinvented a new and useful vImprovement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and enact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the art to make and ilse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings rforming'part of this specification. I i
This invention relates to an, ilmprovenrent in gates, and consists inso constructing and hangingv the gate that it can be raised and' lowered in position for overcoming obstacles, such as snow, mud, &c.
The accompanying drawing is a front view, partly in section, of my improvedgate. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A is the gate-post, B the gate, which in tbe present instance consists of the-upper horizontal bars F and uprights G, D, and E. Tbeuprights C, D, and E. are eitendd above the top'of the gate B, and'in the upper end of upright C is pivoted one end of thejbar F, wliich,.pas'sing through the extension of upright D, and the slottedextension of upright E, is by its other end hung by a pintlc, b, to the upper end of gate-post A, the gate, by its lower portion, being hung to the said gate-post by the jaws or curved arms a, partially encircling the same. .-H is a cord, Afastened at one e'nd to the rail,l F at-t, from whiohit passes down and roundthc pullcyg hungnpon the gate, and thence up to a windlass-drum, I, also hung upon the gate, Abut at m' ncarthe top of said gate. K is a handle to windlass I, by means whereof the windlass can be turned for the purpose of winding the cord H, thus raising the gate, passing, byits slotted uprights D and E, over thevbar or rail F; as is obviouswmithout further explanation. M is a pawl, lhung at one end to the gateB in suitable position for its other end to be enga-gied-u with theratchet-teeth formed around the windlass-drum I, and thus to hold the said drum from turning back-v When desired to lower the gate, the pawl M is raised from thesaidV ratchet-teeth, leaving the windlass f reeto turn by the weight of the lgate pulling on the cord. L is the boltl for fastening the gate when closed, which bolt sets into the vertical groove l made in the end post L. This groove allows the bolt to play up and down in the post when the gate is raised or loweredwithout it being necessary to withdraw said bolt.
I Aclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-e l The bar or rail F,pivoted at one end to a. gate, o.nd at the other lhung to a gate-'post, A, in combination with the windlass-drum I, bung to the gate, and connected to said rail F by the cord H, substantially as'pabove set forth and described. I
JOHN SHARTLE.
