B e it known that we, SILAs ll\lc CULL`otcn and'ALnxAnnna Remus, of Buffalo, Guernsey county, State of Ohio,'have invented new-and useful Improvements in Machines for Driving Fence-Posts; and we hereby decla-re the following to be a. full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings that accompany and form a part of these specifications.
' By this invention we intend to provide facilities for driving or setting posts, for fences orother purposes, in amore expeditious manner than is ordinarily done, and one by which posts may be driven at any angle desired.

Letter A, frame, to rest on a wagon or carriage arranged for that purpose, and to be kept in place on the wagon by standards that i'it into the mortises or slots d in the ends oi' the cross-pieces of the frame. Letter It', hooks for raising, the weight, the upper parts forming levers, by means of which they are detached from'the weight.- These levers, as the weight is raised, come in Contact with two triangular pieces, 1th, placed in the centre groove in the uprights, at or near the top, forcing the levers ltogether and the hooks apart, thus'detaching them from the weight'or hammer. These hooks are guided in their movements up and down by the plates z' z', working in the outer grooves of the uprights.-
The weight or hammer is operated by a horse, attached to a rope, l, which passes through the pulleys c k k,
one end being made fast to the hooks. One of these pulleys is made fast to the head-piece n, and one to each of the cross-pieces of the frame A, as may be seen by reference to the drawings. The fall of the hammer may be made less, if desirable, by moving theopieces t h down from the head-piece, to be held at any point desired,
either by tenons running up through the head-piece, or by bolts passing through them and the sides of vthe uprights B B, as shown in iig. 3. l
By the adjustable features of this machine we are enabled to drive posts at almost any angle, by bringing the uprights to correspond with the angle on which we desire to drive the post; for instance, in position as indicated by red lines in gs. 2 and 3. When the, ground is such as to throw the base of the machine from a.' horizontal line, in position, -for instance, as indicated by the blue lines in iig. 2, we can still keep the uprights B B perpendicular, by braces D D and the joints O O. We make thevuprights ten or twelve feet high, and the hammer should weigh about two hundred pounds, more or less.
The standards spoken of as being applied to the slots or mortises in the frame A will be attached to the wagon on which the frame rests. The hearings being only on the rockers C C, the adjustment above spoken of will bevery easy.
Great difiiculty has heen found heretofore in drivingposts or piles without variation from the position desired, while the adjustable features of our device enable us not only to drive at any angle desired, but, in case a post is swayed from its course by meeting with any obstructions, we can force it back again by changing the direction and application of the hammer.
What I clairnas my invention, and desire to securev by Letters Patent, is
1. A post or pile-driver, constructed with longitudinal beams A A,`resting on rockers C C, which actin conjunction with the slots d, all constructed and combined substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a post or pile-driver thus constructed, I claim the hinged posts B B, provided with braces D D, constructed and operated as described, and for the purposes set forth.
8. In like combination, I claim the adjustable inclines h h, as and for the purposes set forth.
