ALEXANDER G. PERKINS, OF NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
COLUMN CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,495, dated April 7, 1903. Application filed November 15 1902. Serial No. 131,494. (110 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER G. PER.- KINS, of Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Colum'n Construction, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a cross-sectional view of my column, showing my method of construction. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the sections of my columns, showing the tongue and groove. Fig. 3 is asectional view of one of the halves of my column, showing my method of bolting the two halves together.
The object of my invention is to providea simple and compact method of construction of columns for houses or other purposes and also to allow the column to be built in the rough and of any length desirable and afterward to be turned to any shape desired. To accomplish this result, Iproceed in the following manner: Each section, as shown in Fig. 2, is cut into shape, as shown, andis tongued on one side and grooved on the other. The sections are then fitted together and then glued, after which they are nailed each to the other, the nailing being shown in Fig. 1 by the dotted lines. The column is constructed in halves in this manner and the halves afterward being bolted together to makethe complete column.
The manner of bolting is shown in Fig. 3. I do not limit myself, how
ever, to bolting exactly as shown, as the bolt may run diagonally or in any way deemed best for the construction in hand.
' I prefer to use wood in the construction of my column, but of course do not limit my self to that material, as any suitable substance may be utilized.
- After the column is constructed as above described and the halves bolted together it can be turned to any shape desired or fluted in any manner as occasion may require.
What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is='- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a column made in halves, each'half composed of tongue-andgrooved sections, each section nailed laterally to the other and the halves bolted together to make the complete column as shown and described.
2. A column, made in halves, and bolted, each half being composed of sections having tongues and grooves, and'being fastened together by means of glue, and nails driven laterally, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- ALEXANDER G. PERKINS.
