THOMAS OADWALLADER, OF SALEM, OHIO.
LABELING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,377, dated De be 23, 1902.
Application filed April 16, 1902.
T0 (tZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LTHOMAS CADWALLADER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labeling Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to labeling devices such as are used for marking fowls to indicate their ownership or to distinguish fowls, has for its object a device which cannot become detached by accident, such as striking against objects or by the fowl scratching itself, and thereby detaching the device, and consists in certain improvements in construction which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective showing the application of my invention to a fowl; Fig.2, a like view of the labeling device detached with the several parts shown in the position they assume when applied to a fowl; Fig. 3, a like view showing one of the ears bent out of its normal plane for the insertion of one of the hooks of the leg-band; Fig. 3, a detail showing the parts separated.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, Aindicates the leg-band, which is made of a piece of wire, preferably brass, so that it will not corrode, bent into a circle with a hook a at each end thereof, which hooks are bent outward and in opposite directions, with the inner ends or heels ct adjacent to, in the same plane viewed from the edge of the band, and practically abutting each other, so that one hook cannot accidentally pass the other and disengage the Serial No. 108,157. (No model.)
band from the leg of a fowl and from the label or tag attached to the leg-band.
B indicates the label or tag, of flexible material, such as aluminium or other thin sheet metal, which may be provided with any preferred character or characters such as numerals, letters, symbols, or any preferred mark-a0 indicate ownership in the fowl wearing the label. The label is provided with two loops b 6, between which is a space 0 wide enough to accommodate the heels of the books a after the hooks have been pushed into the loops.
To apply the label to the leg-band, one of the loops is bent out of its normal plane, as shown in Fig. 3, the hooks a inserted in both loops b, when the bent loop is restored to the plane of the other loop, when the label is socured to the leg-band and the leg-band secured to the fowl, so that neither the label nor the leg-band can be accidentally detached.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- A labeling device consisting of a band hav ing hooks at its ends bent outward and in the plane of the band, with the heels of the hooks adjacent to and approximately abutting each other, and a label of flexible sheet metal having loops adapted to be bent out of their normal plane and engaged from their inneror adjacent ends by said hooks, and spaced apart at such a limited distance that the hooks will hold each other from disengagement from said loops after the loops have been restored to their normal position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS OADWALLADER.
