IMPROVEMENT IN scALEs.
dlgs .Sittich retrait tu in these Estas ttent mit limiting ont at the sana.
To ALL WHoM 1T MAY coNcERN:
j Be it known that I, JOHN O. DELL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Scales; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.'
My invention consists of a scale in which a single graduated beam is connected both to a platform and to a. scoop," as fully described hereafter, so that the weight of articles placed either on the platform or in the scoop will be indicated on the said beam, without the necessity of adjusting any part of the scale.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to makeV and use my invention, I'will now proceed to describe its oonstructionand operation, reference being-had tothe accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lv is an end elevation, partly in section, of my improved scale.
Figure 2, a plan view, partly, in section, the platform of the scale being removed.
Figure 3, a sectional elevation ou the line L2, iig. 1; and
Figure 4, a section .on the line 3-4, drawn to an enlarged scale.
A is the base of'the scale, at one end of which is a hollow standard, a, and from the, opposite sides of the lutter project arms b b c c.- At the sides of a.A graduated beam, B',"are knife-edged' projections, which rest onA bearings on the arios ZJ and vbetween the arms c c is suspended a rock-frame, F, sharp-edged projections at the sides of which rest on bearings in the said arms, a part of the frame having a sharp lower edge, and bearing in a clevis,f, connected to thc beam B. From the long arm of'this beam B are suspended the usual weightholder D and Aadjustable weight C, and on a screw at the opposite end of the beam turns the ordinary adjustable balance-weight E. Through a clevis, G, which is hung to sharpedged projections at the sides of the frame F, passes a rod, H, iig. 4, the upper end of which extends into a'hollow projection at the junction of the four arms of a frame, I, the saidprojection resting on the clevis Gf, and eatending through an openig in the beam B, without touchingythe latter; In the frame I rests the usual detachable scoop-N, and to the lower end of the rod H is connected a link, k, which is jointed to a projection at the side of the base A, so that the said rod is maintained in a vertical position without the freedom of its vertical movements being interfered with. In links suspended from the base, A, rest sharp-edged projections at the sides oi' two levers, c 7c', a. sharp-edged projection at the inner en d of the lever 7c resting in a clevis, d, suspended from the lever k, and to the end of the.
latter, which projects beneath the standardl fuis jointed a rod, m, the upper end of which is connected to a clevis, n,`suspended from the beam B. From the sides cf the leversk k project knife-edged bearings o o, on which rest projections pp at theunder side ofa platform, L, the latter extending over an opening in the frame A, above the said levers.
When material to be weighed is deposited in the scoop N, the rock-frame F is depressed, and, bearing on the link f, raises the long arm of the beam B, on which the weight Gis adjusted as usual. In like manner, an article placed on the platform L, depresses thc latter, and the levers 7c', draws down the rod m, and thus elevates the long arm of the beam, so that the weight of an article placed in the scoop will be as quickly and accurately indicated on the beam B as if it were placed upon the platform, while it is not necessary to adjust or remove any portion of the scale prior to placing a `substance to be weighed on one part or the other. The scale may,
therefore, be employed for'ascertaining the weight of solid orv bulky articles, for the reception of which the platform is adapted, or of powders, granulated substances, etc., which may be best retained by the scoop. i I do not claim broadly the combination of a graduated beam, a scoop, and a platform, so that the weight of an article placed either upon the platform or in the scoop will be indicated on the beam; but
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A graduated beam B, connected to levers supporting a platform, L, in combination with alever, F, which supports a scoop, N, and which is connected to the beam B, the whole being constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses` JOHN c. DELL.
