UNITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST H. HESTERHAGEN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,767, dated September 9, 1902.
Application filed April 16, 1902.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST H. HESTER- HAGEN, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Hinges,
of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
The object of this invention is to provide an improved hinge designed partly for use in connection with doors, shutters, sashes, gates, and other devices of this class; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists of a hinge constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being an inside elevation of my improved hinge and showing the wings or plates open, part of the construction being in section.
In the practice of my invention I provide a hinge of the class specified which comprises two plates or wings a and I), provided with the usual knuckles through which a pintle 0 passes, and in the form of construction shown the two outer knuckles and the central knuc-j kle a are formed on the wing or plate a, while the interior knuckles b are formed on the wing or plate I), and the outer knuckles a are provided with a screw-threaded extension a onto each of which is screwed a knob or head d, the knob or head (1 in each case being provided with an internally-threaded collar d by means of which the connection with the extensions a of the knuckles a is made. Each of the knobs or heads dis also provided in the form of construction shown with a socket 01 and the pintle c, which is passed loosely through the knuckles a and b projects at each end into these sockets; but the Serial No. 103,126- (No model.)
sockets d are not absolutely necessary, and when said sockets are not employed the pintle-pin will be made shorter, and the ends thereof will bear on the knobs or heads (1 at (1 It is a well-known fact that in hinges of this class the pintles when made separately are constantly working up, this movement being occasioned by the constant swinging of the door, shutter, sash, or gate, and if the said pintles are not constantly watched and kept in proper position there is danger of the hinge being broken and the operation of the door or other device is defective; but with my improvement the pintle is always held in proper position and cannot move in either direction, and a new pintle may be inserted in place of an old one whenever desired, and the hinge or hinges do not require constant care and attention.
It will be understood that the plates or wings of the hinge may be provided with anydesired number of knuckles, and these knuckles may be arranged in any preferred manner.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hinge, the wings or plates of which are provided with knuckles, the end knuckles of the hinge being provided with a screw-threaded extension and a pintle passed loosely through said knuckles and projecting through said screw-threaded extensions and knobs or heads detachably connected with said screwthreaded extensions, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of April, 1902.
AUGUST H. HESTERI-IAGEN.
