Beit known that I, JOSEPH Soss, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, 1
in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invisible Hinges, oi which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it ap- I pertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to what are known as invisible hinges, which cannot be seen when the door or other article to which they are applied is closed; and the object thereot` is to provide an improved device of this class which maybe applied to an ordinary door, a gate, a sash, the cover of a piano, the cover of a box or case, or to any other article to which such devices can be applied, a further object being to provide an invisible hinge which is simple in construction and operation and which is easily applied, and which is strong and durable and will not easily get out of order or need repair, and which maybe made of any desired strength or capacity.'
In addition to providing a hinge which may be applied to doors and other articles as above described, in which application one part of the hinge is secured to a stationary and theother to a swinging member, my improved hinge may be applied to two swinging parts'or members, one of which is hinged to a. stationary support or frame; but in the following description I will describe my improvement as applied to a `loor and doorframe, part oi each of which is shown in the drawings, and in this application of my improved hinge or hinges the separate parts of said hinge or hinges are secured in what are called the adjacent surfaces of the frame and door when the latter is in a closed position.

In the drawings termin g part of this speciiication. I have shown at d what may-be called l a part of the door-frame and at Z) a. part of a door.; but it will be understood that' the part a. may represent any stationary member and the part b any swinging member, -and in some cases both of said parts may be swinging members', and in the practice of my invention I provide a hinge comprising two separate similar parts, each ot' which in the form of construction shown consists ofa yokeshaped frame member or support c2, having a face-plate c3. The yoke-shaped frame members or supports c2 and the face-plates c3 are adapted to be countersunk in corresponding chambers or mortises in the stationary and swinging membersaandb. The yoke-shap d frame members or supports c2 are open at thcir faces, and pivoted within said members, as at d, are curved plates or' rmemberse.4 These curved plates or members e are free to turn in and slide in the separate parts of the hinge which are countersunk in the stationary and swinging members ft and as hereinbefore described, and the movement of the plates or members c in the separate parts of the hinge are guided or controlled and limited by curved slots or grooves c6 in the top and bot tom of the parts c2 of the hinge, and by pins e, secured in the ends ol' the curved plates or members e and movable in the "slots or grooves c, or this construction may be reversed .and the curved plates or members e may be provided with slots or grooves, and
` the top or bottom of the part c2 of the hinge, or both the to n and bottom of said parts, may be provided with pins movable in said curved slots or grooves.
In the form of construction shownthe bottom portion of the pivote/d side of one of the curved plates or memberse is cut away at its pivoted edge, as shown at e3 in Fig. 1, and the top portion of the other curved plate o'r member e is cut away at its pivoted edge, as shown at e. in Fig. l, and this forms projecting parts or hinged portions e5 on each of said members or plates which cross each other, as clearly shown m the drawings, and allow said plates or members e to move 'freely one jipon ari-.-
