To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE'WASHINGTON SIMONS, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Thurston, in the county ofv Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates, and especially to a folding panelgate which is'so constructed that it may be held in a partially-folded relation or allowed to rest its weightupon the ground, relieving the hinges when the gate is closed.

Another feature of the present invention consists in the provision of a pivoted bracewhich is held at its free end by a guide-plate against the side of the gate, whereby the gate whether partially folded or open may be socurely held rigid.

Other features of my invention reside in the novel details, combinations, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved gate closed. Fig. 2 is a view showing the gate partially folded and held in a partiallyfolded position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the brace and guardplate.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a post having a hinge-bar B journaled to the post by means of staples O. This bar is preferably mounted on the post along its central or middle portion and has its ends outwardly and upwardly bent, as illustrated, and on these ends'thegate is hung. The gate comprises the end bars D D and intermediate bars I) D, between which the longitudinal strips E of the gate are pivotally connected. The rear barshave hinge-sockets F, which are mounted upon the ends of the hinge-bar B. To the upper and lower longitudinal strips of the gate are pivotally connected the ends of the inclined braces H H, the forward ends of said braces being held together and in a fixed relation to each other by means of the plate K. The forward end of said plate K is adapted to rest parallel to the rear face ofone of the bars D whether the gate be open or partially folded. A plate M is provided, which is fastened to the outer face of 'a bar D, with one of its longitudinal edges projecting toward the hinged end of the gate and beyond the edge of the bar to which it is fastened.

Pivoted to the'upper portion of the gate, preferably to the upper longitudinal strip, is a bar R, the free end of which is adapted to swing down in the,path of the pivoted V= shaped brace tohold the gate partially folded. As the gate is partially folded,'which is ef= fected by raising the forward end of same, the free end of the V-shaped brace will swing down, and as the gate is returned to its hori= zontal position the free end of the brace will lie adjacent to the central or middle portion of the end bars of the gate,- as illustrated. When it is desired to relieve the hinges of the weight of the gate, the forward end of the latter may be depressed, so that the forward'bars will restupon the ground.

From the foregoing it will be observed that by turning the hinge bar or rod laterally the gate will be allowed to swing in one direction or the other, so that the gate will be when wide open in line with the front face of the gate-post. The gate may be partially folded and held in such position by means of the pivoted bar, thus being adjusted to clear 0bstructions, snow in winter-time, &c.

Having thus described my'invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
