Be it known that I, J .inns F. TowNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of lilinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to gates; and it has for its object to construct a hinged gate of two sections, one being adapted to slide upon the other, whereby one of the sections may be slid upon the other a slight distance for foot passengers, or both sections when extended be swung open for the passage of vehicles, Ste.

A further object of the invention is to provide a gate of this character, which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, effective in its operation, and one that will be strong and durable.

Vith these ends in view the invention consists in theimproved construction and combinatiors of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate constructed in accordance .with myinveution. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing one of the sections slid upon the other to allow the passage of persons on foot. Fig. 3 is a transverse section looking rearwardly,l and Fig. 4 is a transverse section looking forwardly or toward the free end ot' the gate.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A A represent uprights or posts.

B represents the gate, which consists of two sections, C C', one of which is pivoted to one of the posts A in such manner that it may swing or open in either direction.`

The section C consists of two posts, 11 b', connected by a series of bars, a, arranged a suitable distance apart. The inner of these posts, b', of the section C is provided at one side of the bars a with a series of rectangular openings or passages, b2, the next to the upper one of which is somewhat larger than the rest, and in which opening is journaled, midway between the ends thereof, a roller or idler, c.

d', which are connected by a series of parallel bars, c, which are arranged in a similar manner to those of section O.

The post d of section C is provided with a series of rectangular openings, j', similar to those of the forward post of section C, already described, the upper of said openings being solnewhat larger than the remainder of the series and having journaled therein a roller, g. The openings in these posts of the sections C C are arranged upon opposite sides of the same, and the openings in the post of the section C are adapted to receive the bars of the section C, while the openings of the section C are adapted to receive the bars of section C, the sliding section C being guided in its movement by the rollers or idlers, which allow it to travel freely and easily.

The post d of section C is provided at its lower end with an extension, b, which is adapted to lit in a recess, b, of a plate, b5, thus preventing the swing of the gate while the section C is being slid to allow the passage of persons.

Adjacent to the outer post A, at the lower end thereof, is provided a strip, c', which has a beveled inner face, said strip being adapted to support the free end of the section C in line with the section C', the movement of the said section C upon said strip being facilitated by its beveled inner face. It will thus be seen that the section C may be readily slid upon the section C, or that when necessary the entire gate may be swung open.

I am aware that it has been heretofore proposed to construct a gate composed of a pivoted swinging section and a sliding section, and this, broadly, I disclaim.

Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
