LEWIS O. SCHULTZ, OF MATTOO-N. ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 70,625, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVED GAR-GOUPLING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEWIS O. SCHULTZ, of Mattocn, Coles county, Illinois, have invented a new-and useful Improvement in Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification. i g
The object of this invention is to provide a safe, cheap, and 'efieetive coupling for railroad cars, one that shall he composed of but few parts, and which shall couple the cars automatically; and the invention consists in attaching to the draw-head of the car a coupling-pin, and a guide-piece, and a hinged catch, all of which are made to operate effectively without the aid of springs or weights attached, as will be hereinafteri'ully described.
The drawing represents a longitudinal vertical section of my coupling, showing the different parts, and their proper location.
A represents the draw hcad. B is the coupling-link. C is the coupling-pin. D isthe guide for the link after the link passes into the draw-head, and which keeps the link in place. E is a guide-piece in the'front part of the draw-head, which is adjustable, and which guides the link as it enters the draw-head, and which can be adjusted for cars of diii'erent heights. F is a hinged or pivoted catch on the upper part of the draw-head. The coupling-pin has a slot in it-tvhich allows itto slide up and down, and to work on a pin attached to the drawhead, seen at a. The pivot of the catch F is seen ate. F is raised'by the rod (1 when the cars are to be uncoupled. In that case the hookf of the catch leaves the pin a, and the point of the catch 9 strikes the drawhead, thus giving the catch a lever purchase upon the pin. When the cars are to be-coupled,'as represented in thedrawing, the link strikes the guide-pin E, over which it slides, and entering the draw-head it strikes the coupling-pin and the guide D. It pushes back the pin, which turns on the pivot e'far enough to allow it to drop into the link when the cars are coupled. J is a shoulder on the draw-head, which holds the coupling-pin to its place and receives the strain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The catch F, the coupling-pin C, the guides D and E, and the lifting-rod d, constructed and arranged substantially as described, in combination with the draw-head of a railroad car, for the purpose set fcrth.
