,'@ ALL zWHM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES McLAUGHLIN, of Duncannon, in the county of Perry, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Gar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, `which will enable others skilled in the art to make'and use the same,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specieatiomin which-- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention taken in the line z x, iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a'plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This inveutionrelates to a new and improved car-coupling, of that class which are self-connecting or self- `coupling, `and it consistsiin a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully shown and described,' wherehy a very simple and ecient car-coupling of the class specied is obtained'.
All.l represent draw-heads, which may be attached to the car in the usual or in any proper manner, and B are coupling-pins, which are fitted vertically in the front parts of the draw-heads and allowed to pass down thrugh the bottom plate a of the same in order to secure the link or shackle C to the draw-heads and form a connection between the same. 0n the upper surface of each draw-head there is a slide, D, which works in a socket, E, through which the Coupling-pin B also passes. This slide D is connected by a rod or bar, Ei, to a weight, F, which is suspended in the upper part of a framing, Gr, on the draw-head by pivots b, as shown clearly in iig. 1. This suspended weight F'has a tendency to keep the slide D shoved foi-Ward` in the socket E; and, when the coupling-pin B is raised, the weight F forces the slide D underneath it, and the latterA holds the pin up. The slides D have each a pendent pin, c, attached, and these pins extend down into the draw-heads through oblong slots d in the upper plates thereof.
From the above description it will be seen that Where the coupling-pin B of one'jdraw-head is held in an upward position by the slide D underneath it, and the link or shackle C ofu the other draw-head passes into it, the pendent pin c of `the slide D, which sup-ports theelevated pin, will be acted upon by the entering link or shackle and the slide D forced back so that the pin may drop through the link.
Each draw-head is provided with a link or shackle, C, one only being used, the idle link being itted around pins d cl in the draw-head, the front pin ol extendingthe Whole height of thedraw-head and serving` as a. drawI pin. Directly hack of the pin d of each draw'-head there is a bearing, e, which prevents the link or shackle being forced back in coupling.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The slide D provided with the pendent pin c and connected with the suspended weight F, in connection with the coupling-pin B and link or shackle C, all arranged to operate' substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. v
JAMES McLAUGHLIN.
