Description

l @nitrati iatresis'tmt @frnf4 HENRY K. SMITH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
` Letters Patent No. 70,278, dated Octolver 29, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGH-BELLS.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it' known that I, HENRY K. SMITH, of Boston, inthe county of' Suffolk, and State f Massachusetts, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Sleigh-Bells, or in connecting such a bell and its tongue together, and to a strap or its'eqnivalent; endl do herebydeelare the saine to be fully described in the follow- .ing specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of whichi Figure I is a longitudinal section ot a. bell and strap applied together in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a topview, and
Figure 3 a side elevation of the hook for supporting the tongue to the bell.
One Inode of connecting the tongue-hook t-o aboli has been to ca'stthe bellbody upon the shank of' the hook; but this method of conjoining the two renders'the shank easily separable from 'the body. Another method has been to make a hole in the corner of the bell and pass the shank up through such hole-and hook it about the projection extendingV upward fromthe crown of the bell; in which case the projection served in part as a means of' fixing the bellV to its strap. The last-described application of the tongueJm-ok is an expensive one, and causes the4 bent part or portion of the shank which encompasses the lprojection to be in the way of fixing the bell to its Strap. Besides, it -isiobjctionable .on account of appearance. Y
In carrying out my :improvement I make the tongue-hook A with an eye, a, te receive the shank b of a rivet, B. This rivet is to be` introduced through the said eye and thecrown c of the bell C, and thence through the strapD, after which the end of the shank of the rivet should be upset. 4 The head ofthe rivet may be either above or below the crown c, and the rivet may go through a metallic washer, d, arranged on itsshank, and
below the eye of' the tongue-hook. In g. 2 the tongue of the bell is shovvn at E as suspended on the hook,Y
which, after being fixed to the'bell and carried through the tongue-eye, as to hold the tongue in connection with the body of the bell.
By my invention or improv-ement not only will the tongue-hook be connected to the bell, but the latter will be connected with its fasteninglstrap by means of the rivet, the whole being so that the connection of the bell and the strap will be a `very strong, ecient, and durable one.
What, therefore, I claim as my invention, isi The improved construction-of the .tongue-hook, and arrangement of it, the rivet, the bell, and the strap, as described.
should be bent up toward the crown so" HENRY .K. SMITH. Witnesses 'R. H. EDDY,
SAMUELN. PIPER.
