CARD and PARDON ANDREWS, of Phoenix, in the county of Kent, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and improved Picker and Stallt combined; and we do hereby declare that the following is -a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use thelsame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming'part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a facevew of the combined picker and stati', and

The present invention consists, iirst, in the combination ot' the'picker-stafi`, having recesses ofV unequal diameters in. its end,lthe loose pad and elastic cushion placed in said recesses, and held in place by a metallic plate, as hereinafter more fully described; second, in so securing the leather or other Vpicker-pad within the` staas to allow a side or lateral play or motion thereto, whereby it is enabled the more perfectly to obtain its own centre of action as itstrikes against the -shuttle for driving it. n

A, in the drawings, represents the staff, having located at its end B the pickerfC. This picker @consists of a leather or other suitable pad, D, that is inserted in a recess, E, of the staf, resting by its inner end against y an India-rubber cushion, F, placed within the inner portion G of the said recess E. The portion of the recess E containing the pad D is somewhat larger in diameter than the pad, so as to allow a sider'or lateral play or motion thereto, and within such recess the pad is held by means of a plate, H, fastened with screws'I to the staf.- This plate H has a hole, J, in it to expose the surface ofthe pad D.

From Vthe above detail description of our improved stati' and picker combined, it is vplainly manifest that the several features and advantages hereinbefore stated are secured. In lieu of thc rubber cushion F, other forms of elastic cushions may be used, as, for instance, a coiled spring; the same result cifccted.

We claim asK new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. The combination of the staff A, having recesses -E G of unequal diameters in its end B, thc loose-pad D, elastic cushion F, and plate J, constructed as hereindescribed and for the purpose specified.

2. So securing the' pad in the stall` as t'o have a side or lateral play, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
