JOHN F. BROUGHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHOE POHSHER,
SPEGIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No, 696,712, dated April 1, 1902.
Application filed December 30, 1901. Serial No. 87,692. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. BROUGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Polishers, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improvement on a shoe-polishing device for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me February 10, 1897, No. 577,005, a further object being to simplify the construction of the said shoe-polishing device and to render the operation thereof more successful; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a shoe-polishing device constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved shoepolishing device; Fig. 2, a plan view of a blank for forming a clamp, two of which are employed, is made; Fig. 3, a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a cross-section on the line 4 4: of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I employ an oblong block Ct, which is preferably about two inches square in cross-section and from six to ten inches long, although these dimensions may be modified to any desired extent. One side of the block a is cut away, as shown at b, forming a semi-elliptical longitudinal space therein, as clearly shown in Fig. 1,'and pivoted to the opposite end portions of the block at c are clamps (I, each of which consists of a horizontaltop portion d and arms (i bent at right angles thereto. The clamps (Z are stamped from a sheet of spring metal, and one of the blanks from which these clamps are formed is shown in Fig. 2 and a crosssection thereof is given in Fig. 8, and the body portion of these clamps is curved upwardly at the outer edge, as shown at d, and provided at the inner edge with teeth (1, the points of which are curved downwardly.
The pivot-pins at c-pass through holes 0 formed in the arm portions of the clamps, and said arm portions are preferably of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, being provided with elbow portions 01 in which are formed circular holes dland in practice pins, screws, or nails e are driven into or screwed into the sides of the block near each end, and said pins, screws, or nails are provided with rounded heads e I also provide a polisher consisting of a stripfof flexible material composed of felt, woolen, or cotton fabric or any other suitable material, and this polishing-strip is preferably provided with a strengthening-piece f composed of canvas or any other suitable flexible material, and said parts fandf may be connected in any desired manner and are of the same width and preferably of the same length; but the stiffening or strengthening strip f may be made shorter than the outer polishing portion, if desired.
In practice the polishing-strip, including the strengthening-piecefhis wrapped around the bottom portion of the block and passed up over the ends thereof, and the ends of the polishing-strip are folded over the top of the block and the clamps d are turned down thereonto, and in this operation the springarms (1 of said clamps pass over the heads 6 of the nails, screws, orpins e, and said heads pass through the holes (1 as clearly shown in Fig. i, and by this means the clamps are held in close contact with the ends of the polishing-strip and said polishing-strip is securely held in place.
The teeth (2 of the clamps d or points thereof are curved downwardly and serve to securely hold the ends of the polishing-strip, and in practice I also preferably curve the parts of the arms (1 of the clamps below the holes (Z outwardly, as shown in Fig. 4,, so as to facilitate the sliding of said arms over the rounded heads e of the pins, screws, or nails 6, and all that is necessary to raise the clamps and release the ends of the polishing-strip is to press outwardly on the outwardly-curved portions d of the arms d".
In the operation of this device the block a 100 is'grasped in the hand and used in the same manner as other devices of this class, and the result produced thereby is similar to that produced by other polishers employed for this purpose.
The curving up of the lower edges of the clamp-arms at cl facilitates the raising of the said clamps when necessary in order to detach or place in position the ends of the polishing-strip, and the entire device is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A shoe-polisher comprising an oblong block having its under side surface cut out longitudinally, and provided with a flexible polishing-strip which is stretched longitudinally of the bottom thereof and the ends of which are folded upwardly over the ends of said block,'and spring-clamps provided with angular arms which are pivoted to the sides of said block near each end thereof, and the body portion of which extends across the top of said block, the arms of said clamps being provided each with a hole or opening, and fastening devices secured in the sides of said block and provided with heads adapted to enbody portion of which extends across the top of said block, the arms of said clamps being provided each with a hole or opening and fastening devices secured in the sides of said block and provided with heads adapted to enter said holes or openings, the body portions of said clamps being flat in cross-section and the inner edges thereof being provided with downwardly-directed teeth, substantially as shown and described.
3. A shoe-polisher comprising an oblong block having its under side surface cut out longitudinally, and provided with a flexible polishing-strip which is stretched longitudinally of the bottom thereof. and the ends of which are folded upwardly over the ends of said block, and spring-clamps provided with angular arms which are pivoted to the sides of said block near each end thereof, and the body portion of which extends across the top of said blockthe arms of said clamps being provided each with a hole or opening and fastening devices secured in the sides of said block and provided with heads adapted to enter said holes or openings, the body portions of said clamps being flat in cross-section and the inner edges thereof being provided with downwardly-directed teeth ,and the outer edges thereof being upwardly curved, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 28th day of December, 1901.
JOHN F. BROUGHER.
