Be it known that I. LINDSAY M. BRYAN, a citizen of the United States,residin g at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Combination Shoe Cleaning, Blacking, and Polishing Devices,of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvemnts in a combination device for cleaning, blacking, and polishing shoes and the like; and its object is to arrange and combine in compact and convenient form the necessary parts. for this purpose, whereby the operation can be performed with greater'convenience, cleanliness, and efiectiveness, and the device when not in use may be folded into small space and carried in the pocket.

My invention consists in constructing a flexible covering for the hand having an opening for the thumb at each edge to make it reversible, and a blacking-box and dauber attached to one surface thereof and so placed with relation to each other that by a simple movement of the fingers, as in closing the hand, the dauber may be brought into contact with the contents of the box, and by extending the fingers, as in opening the hand, the dauber,with the blacking adhering thereto, is then in convenient position to be applied to the shoe.

My invention also consists in providing a reversible flexible flap having a suitable ru bbing and polishing surface on each side and attaching one end thereof ,to the closed end of the'body and the other end thereof to the other end of the body, the purpose of this flap being to afford additional-surfaces for supplementary cleaning andv polishing.

tures of the several parts and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same whereby certain important advantages are secured and the device is rendered simple and cheap and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as. will be hereinafter fully set forth. a

The novel features of theinvention will be carefully defined in the claims. In the accompanying drawings,which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a front flap, the dotted lines indicating that the flap may be attached at the open end of the body either at its front or back. In the views, A indicates the body, formed of flexible material and so constructed as to beadapted for use on the hand, havingan opening a for the thumb at each edge, so that it may be used and reversed on either hand. The front ctmay be formed of any flexible material, and I prefer to form the back a of cloth having a thick woolly or hairy surface suitable for brushing and polishing, as seen in Fig. 3. I secure the blacking-box 8 upon the front surface of the body in substantially the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, preferably by means of a rivet b, as shown in Fig. 5, the box having a lid 1). I secure the dauber C near the opposite end of the front surface in substantially the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and this dauber may consist of a brush, felt, or other suitable material.

At the closed end of the body A, I attach a flexible flap D, provided with surfaces suit- Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the back of the device and the reversible able for supplementary cleaning and polishing, and for this purpose I prefer to construct one of said surfaces of smooth fabric 01 and the other of piled fabric cl, the latter being designed for both cleaning and rough polishing and the former for finishing the polishing operation. This flap is preferably provided with an elastic cord d at its free end, adapted to take over and engage With the buttons d to hold the flap, which is reversible, against the front or back of the body, as

desired, the same buttons being so arranged that the flap may be secured to them from either side.

The manner of using my device is as follows: Place it upon the hand, as shown in Fig. 3. Then draw the flap over the front a and secure it against the same by looping the cord over the buttons. This brings the piled surface cl into proper position for cleaning the shoe. After cleaning the shoe by applying this surface reverse the flap to the back of the body and loop the cord over the buttons, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. This exposes the dauber and blackingbox, as shown in Fig. 1. Then remove the lid 1) of the blacking-box and supply the dauber with blacking by simply bending the hand, as shown in Fig. 2, and then by simply extending the fingers, as shown by the dotted lines in said figure, the dauber may be readily and conveniently applied to the shoe, the operation being repeated until the surface of the shoe is sufficiently covered with blacking.

Next reverse the flap to the front of the hand,

which again brings the piled surface into posit-ion for completing the polishing operation. If desired, the smooth surface of the flap may then be used to give a more perfect finish.

It willbe observed that the woolly or hairy surface a is not brought into use in the operation above described, but by reversing the body on the hand this surface may be used for cleaning or polishing the shoe, if desired. I prefer, however, not to bring this surface into contact with the shoe, but to use it for brushing the hat and other clothing. This enables me to combine in a single device a compact portable pocket shoe cleaning and polishing device which is also suitable for use as a clothes-brush.

The body of the device, as well as the flap, being made of flexible material and being adapted for use on the hand, its cleaning and polishing surfaces readily conform to the curves and hollows of the shoe which greatly facilitates the ease,eifectiveness, and rapidity of cleaning and polishing, and the operation is accomplished without soiling the hand.

My device being flat and flexible may be readily folded or rolled into compact form and adapted to be conveniently carried in the pocket or other small space.

From the above description it will be obvious that the device is capable of some modiflcation without material departure from the scope of the invention, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts as herein set forth.

I claim A l. A combination shoe cleaning, blacking and polishing device comprising a flexible covering for the hand having attached to one of its outer surfaces a blacking-box and dauber and the opposite outer surface consisting of material suitable for cleaning and polishing, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a combination shoe cleaning, blacking and polishing device, a flexible covering for the hand having ablackingbox and dauber attached thereto, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a combination shoe cleaning, blacking and polishing device, a flexible covering for the hand, a flexible reversible flap attached to the closed end thereof a button at each edge of said covering and an elastic loop connected to the free end of the flap and adapted to take over and engage with said buttons whereby the flap may beheld against either side of the body, as desired, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
