SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,235, dated March 11, 1902.
Application filed $eptembcr 20, 1901. Serial No. 75,751. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX Brown a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at 16 Rue Gevray, Geneva, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Cork-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cork-extractor, and has for its object to provide a device which is used in connection with a corkscrew and which can be readily adjusted to the neck of a bottle.
To this end the invention consists of a corkextractor in combination with a corkscrew, comprising a base-ring, oppositely-disposed supporting-arms, the upper ends thereof con-' verging to support a head centrally over said base-ring, a pinion and a rack-bar provided in said head, a hand-operated shaft for said pinion, a hook formed at the lower end of said rack-bar, a corkscrew having a ring-shaped shank and lugs projecting in opposite directions therefrom, said ring shaped shank being adapted to engage the hook of the rackbar, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The drawing represents the cork-extractor as applied to the neck of a bottle and engaging the corkscrew preparatory to extracting the cork.
Referring to the drawing, Ct represents the base-ring of the extractor, that is adapted to be supplied to the flaring part of the neck of the bottle, so as to afiord a firm support therefor, the supporting-arms b being arranged diametrically upon the ring a and curved inwardly at the top to support the head a. The head 0 forms a housing for the rack-bar cl and the pinion f, meshing therewith. The rackbar d is arranged centrally above the ring a and is adapted to move in vertical direction. The handpiece g, secured to the outer end of the shaft 6 that has secured at its inner end the pinion f, is adapted to reciprocate the rack-bar that meshes with the pinion f. The corkscrew h is provided with a ring-shaped shank '5 and has the oppositelyprojecting lugs l and k. The lower end of the rack-bar 0? is provided with a hook e, that is adapted to engage the ring-shaped shank t of the corkscrew h.
In operation the corkscrew h is inserted into the cork of the bottle in the usual man ner, after which the extractor is applied to the bottle and the hook e of the rack 01 brought into engagement with the ring-shaped shank e' of the corkscrew. By turning the handpiece g in proper direction the rack-bar is caused to move in upward direction, thereby extracting the cork from the brittle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a cork-extracting device, the combi nation, with a corkscrew having a ring-shaped shank, of a base-ring, oppositely-disposed supporting-arms, a head supported at the upper ends of said arms, a rack-bar adapted to reciprocate in said head, a pinion meshing with said rack-bar and journaled in said head, and a hook provided at the lower end of said rack-bar for engaging the ring-shaped shank of said corkscrew, substantially as set forth.
2. In a cork-extracting device, the combination, with a corkscrew having a ring-shaped shank and lugs projecting oppositely therefrom, of a base ring, oppositely disposed supporting-arms converging inwardly at the upper ends thereof, a head supported at the upper end of said arms, a rack-bar arranged in said head and adapted to reciprocate in vertical direction, a pinion journaled in said head to mesh with said rack-bar, a shaft for operating said pinion, and a hook formed at the lower end of said rack-bar, said hook being adapted to engage the ring-shaped shank of said corkscrew, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
