Letters Patent No. 114,937, dated May 16, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT. lN WAGON-JACKS The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
. following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference'being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a carriage or lifting-jack,
as willbehereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a longitudinal vertical section of my jack.
A represents a bed-plate of any suitable size, from which rises a'box, B, grooved vertically for the standard O and lever D towork in.
The standard 0 moves perpendicularly up and down in the box B, and on one side, at the uppeneud, is provided withia series of notches, a a, for holding the piece E by means of the bail I) attached to said piece, and inserted or laid in the notches a a.
The lever D is pivoted in the lower portion of the box B, its inner end coming under the standard 0, and on the upper side of the lever is a semicircular projection, G'.
The fulcrum of the lever "D is, as seen, on one side of the center of the circle G, which raises the standard 0, therefore holding the object raised without any assistance.
By raising the lever D the standard 0 is raised, and from the construction of the lever it will be seen that when partially raised the weight of the object assists in raising itself.
Having thus fully described my invention,
\Vhat Lolaimas new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, isi The construction and arrangement ofthe bed-plate A, box B, standard 0 with notches a a, piece E with bail 'b, and lever D, with semicircle G, all substantially-as and for the purposes herein set forth.
