Description
@einen tetra @anni @fitte GEORGE W. SANDERS, OF SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT. Letters Patent No. 69,368, elated October 1, 1867.
IMPROVED MOP-HEAD.
To ALL WHoM IT MAY ooNonRN:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. SANDERS, of Springfield, in the county of Windsor, and State of Vermont, have made and invented a new and usefulImprovement in Mop-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and
Figure 2 a longitudinal section.
My invention relates to an improvement in mop-heads, and is designed to facilitate the adjustment ofthe mop or scrub, and to secure the same firmly when in use.
And in carrying out my invention, I provide an ordinary wooden handle, a, which I make* three or four feet in length. And, further, I construct a cast-iron head, I), which I make five or six inches long, and prmido the same with a socket on the upper side for the insertion ofa handle, and with a groove or channell extending along the lower side and around the ends thereof. And, further, I provide a movable jaw, c, which I usually make of iron wire of suitable strength; and in about the form represented in fig. l; and the upper ends of the wire forming the jaw c I connecttogether by means of a cast-iron slide, (Z, iig. 1, the middle of which I make in the form of a semicirculnr swell, to fit the convex surface of the handle a, whereon it ispdesigned to move; and I provide the front or outside of the slide d with slightly-inclined projections or teeth o 0, designed to operate inl the nature of the thread of a screw or bolt, as hereinafter described. And, further, I construct what I tei-ma screw-cam, e, of about the size and form represented in gs. lV and 2. The cam e I usually make of cast iron, and provide the same with ears or thumb-pieces gg", whereby to turn the cani and adjust the mop. I then insert the handle ain the socket of head b, and arrange the jaw e, the ends of which are held by the groove or channel in the ends oi'- head b, while the slide CZ rests or moves on the handle a. And, further, I provide an iron pin or rivet,f, whereby I attach the screw-cam e rmly to the side of the socket of headb, and in such a manner that the teeth o o of slide d are caught by the cam e, and by turning the cam,the jaw c is moved up or down at pleasure for the adjustment and security of the mopor scrub.
v Having thus described the nature and construction of my invention, and how the same is to be operated, I wish to be understood that it is to the screw-cam e and slide d that my invention particularly relates, and for which I wish to obtain Letters Patent, and v I claim the screw-cam e and slide d or its equivalent, in combination with the jaw c, constructed and operating substantially in the manner described and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE W. SANDERS.
