UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS MATIIIAS AND EDWARD L. RAY, OF IIAYNES, IOWA.
PICK, are.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,559, dated January 21, 1902.
Application filed October 7, 1901. Serial No. 77,764. (No model.) t
To a/ZZ whom 13o' may concern:
Be it known that we, LEWIS MATHIAS and EDWARD L. RAY,citizens of the United States, residing at Haynes, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented certain newr and useful Improvements in Picks and other Like Tools; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specilication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. The present invention has reference to that class of picks and like tools in which the pick or tool proper is removably connected to the handle 5' and it consists in the means employed for securing the tool to the sockethead',where by the pick or tool is securely held in place and a rigid and firm connection is provided between. it and the handle, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
t Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation of the pick, partly in section; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation; Fig. 3, a perspective View of the pick proper; Fig. 4, a similar view of the socket-head; Fig. 5, aperspective view of the key-block for connectingthe pick to the sockethead.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a portion of the handle provided with the socket-head B,and within this socket-head is held the pick proper, as shown at C.
The pick C has a recessed seat dfor the u pper portion b vof the socket-head B to hold the pick against moving lengthwise, the socket c of the head tting over the handle A.
The head B has a recessed guide d and inclined shoulders e, which form a part of the opening E to receive the pick C, said opening also receiving the key-block D. This keyblock D has inclined shoulders f upon its sides, the incline of said shoulders being supported by the inclined shoulders or seats e when in position in the headA B.
The key-block D has a depending tongue g, which terminates at one end in a screw-shank h to receive a tightening screw-nut t'. When the pick C is in position and in engagement with the head B, the key-block D is inserted in the opening E, the shoulders f of said block resting on the inclined bearings e. The nutt' is now engaged with the screw-threaded shank h and turned in the proper direction, which will draw the block D up against the under side of the center'of the pick and the recessed seat a up against the upper portion b of the socket-head, thus tightly and rmly holding the pick to the socket-head.
It is evident that many changes and modiications may be made in our invention without in any manner affecting the essential features thereof, and any such changes or modiiications as would come within ordinary mechanical skill or judgment may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, such as substituting any form of tool for the pick shown, as it is immaterial as to what form or kind of tool is used in connection with the specially-formed socket-head and key-block.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a pick or other like tool, a suitable head having an opening through which the tool proper is seated, inclined shoulders and a re` cessed guide forming an extension to the opening, andawedge-shaped key-block adapted to fit the opening in the head and having a depending tongue to engage the recessed guide of the opening, said key-block having a screw shank and nut,'substantiall`y as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that We claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
