Description
@uitrit tetris y gamut @Hirn HOMER WRIGHT, OF PITTSBURG. PENNSYLVAN l A. Letters Patent No. 69,151, dated September 2l, 1867.
IMPROVED JUG TOP.
'ro ALL WHoMIT MAY coNcERN;
Bc it known that I, HOMER WRIGHT, of Pittsburg, iii the` county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Jug Tops; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a view of niy combined hinge and knob.
Figure 2 is a sectional diagram of my jug top.
Figure 3 is a diagram ofthe lid of my jug top.
Figure 4 is a view of the body of my' jug top.
Figure 5 is a view of a finished jug top.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an iinprovement'in an article ofA manufacture knownns a jug top, and has for i'ts object, first, the forming of thc hingo'and knob' of ajug top of one piece of metal, either by casting the Sam0-1 a metallic mould, from Britannia or other soft metal, or forming it up from sheet metal; second, thc formation of au opening in the-lid of the jug top to receive thc said knob; third, the formation of a convex bulge on the ba-ck part of the lid, to enable it to swing clear oi' the back of the jug top in opening and closing.
To enable those skilled in thc art to fully understand and consti-uct my invention, I will proceed t0 describe it.
l I cast my jug-tcp body, fig. 4, from soft metal, (Britannia, for exainple,) in a metallic mould, and of the usual form, except that I cast it over a wire, which forms a hole, A B, iig. 4, in which the hinge-wire is afterwards inserted. Itis next put in the lathe and turned out on the inside, when it is ready to receive the coinbined hinge and knob piece represented by iig. 1, also in gs. 2 and 5, at D. This piece being hinged to the body" by a proper wire, the holes A B are next closed with solder, which completely secures and conceals theiwire. It is now ready for the reception of the lid F, figs. 3, 2, and 5. The lid has an opening, H, foi' the purpose of receiving the knob, as'sliown at H, gs. 2 and 5. The lid has also a convex bulge, P, figs. 2, 3, ojilll 5, to permit it to swing clear of the back of the body in opening and closing. The lid is applied by first laying the knob back, then holding the lid sideways, and at right angles with the body, when the leaf part K of the knob, figs. 1, 2, and 5, will readily pass up through the opening H; then, by turning theA lid around to its place, the nose L will close the opening H snugly. The lid is next secured to the hinge by solder, when thelJu-g top isready to be turned on the outside. This is done on the lathe in the usual inannci', after which it is buifed with sand and oil, on a leather wheel, which completes thev process.
By this arrangement, it will bc seen that a jug top can be made having the hinge and knob combined in one piece, which, in combination with the opening in the lid and the convex bulge on the hack part of the lid, produces a combination easily fitted up, with agreat saving of labor over the old process, and a great improvement in appearance when finished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Combining `the hinge and knob of ajug top in one piece, as substantially specified.
2. The opening H in the lid, when used in combination with the hinge and knob-piece, as set forth.
`3. The convex bulge P on tlielid, when used in coinhiiii'ition with the hinge und knob-piece and opening l'l in the lid, es substantially set forth.
