TO WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN'EVANS, of Davenport, in the county of Scott, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick-Moulds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of Vthesame, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention consists in providing better means than have heretofore been devised for moulding clay into the form of bricks, and delivering the clay when moulded upon the proper table, preparatory to placing Ait in the kilnJto be burned.
To this end construct a mould as represented on the drawings, It is made in the form of the ordinary briok-mould, with a. sliding bottom to each compartment, all ot which said sliding bottoms are held firmly together by iron hars along their several ends. These sliding bottoms are represented by the letter A on `the drawings, and the iron bars are marked B. On the inside of these iron bars, and adjusted to titcorresponding grooves in the ends of the partition pieces of the mould, I ai'lx guides marked C. The said grooves are marked D, and are usually lined with some suitable metal. I sometimes make these grooves on the sides of the mould instead of placing them in the ends of the partition pieces, in which case I adjust the guides on the `outside of l the bars, and I sometimes make grooves both in the sides of the mould and in the ends ot' the partition pieces and adjust double guides thereto on the bars. The effect of these guides working in conjunction with the grooves is to cause the sliding'bottoms to move up and down with perfect regularity at right angles with the sides of the mould. This they accomplish withoutregard to the position in which the mould may happen to be held in the? hands ofthe operator.- The result is that there can be no catching or clogging in the movement of said sliding bottom by reason of the mould being held on any line diverging from a horizontal. The ends ofthe several partition pieces are left open from their4 bottoms to Within a short distance from the top of the mould, so as to give room for the movement of the side bars B, and the lower sides thereof are made secure and firm by iron straps marked E.
What I claim as my invention, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A brick-mould having sliding bottoms A and side bars B, the movements of which are regulated by guides i C and grooves D, substantially as described. i JOHN EVANS. Witnesses:
J. A. LEIBER,
S. R. JONES.
