' PACKING BOX OR PACKAGE.
s'PEcrFrcATroiv farming part of Letters Patent No. 685,325, atea casteil 29, 190i. Application filed May 20,1901. Serial No. 60,981. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC W. DYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing Boxes or Packages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes or packages for packing codec and other articlesm-such, for example, as cereals, starch, &c. Coffee packed in such packages may be in the bean or in a ground state. It' the latter, the package is so constructed that it is impossible for the contents to sift through the package.
It is therefore the object of thepresent invention to provide means for sealingthe package in such a manner that atmospheric moisture cannot enter said package and the aroma of the coffee cannot escape from said package.
Preceding a detail description of my invention reference is made to the laccompanying drawings, of which-" f- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved package. Fig. 2 is a section on the line a: of Fig. l. Fig; 3 is a section on the line at w of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a View of the blank of which the box is formed. f
Referring iirst to Eig. 4, the blank shown.
therein is scored along the lines l and 2 to provide when folded four sides 3 and the tongue 4, by means of which the box is formed by uniting the said tongue 4 to the opposite edge 5. The blank on each side of the parallel score-lines l is cut at 6 to provide four overlapping top and bottom aps 7. The blank from which the box is thus formed'is coated with paraffin on its inner surface. The flaps 7 when bent over, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, are held in position by top and bottom Wrappers 8, consisting of an integral cap'made of paper or other material, which is secured thereto. The four edges of said wrappers or caps fit over the ends and around the four sides of the package, as shown in Fig. l, and are secured in such position by suitable adhesive substance.
9 designates oblong sealing strips constructed of muslim, paper, or other suitable fabric. These sealing strips are secured across the center of the top and bottom wrappers 8 on the package by suitable adhesive substance. They are placed on the outside of the wrappers 8, and the ends l0 thereof are carried down on opposite sides of the package and are likewise secured to said sides.
1l designates a side wrapper which incloses the sides of the package and secured-by suitable vadhesive substance. The overlapped ends lO of the sealing-strips and the edges of the top and bottom Wrappers 8 are inclosed by this side wrapper ll, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, where the ends lO of the sealingstrips are shown in dotted lines and in full lines where a portion of the side wrapper ll is broken away. By this manner of sealing and wrapping the package all possibility of air or atmospheric moisture entering said package is obviated.
Having described my invention, I claiml. In a box or package, the combination of a box made from an integral blank creased transversely into four equal sections to provide four equal sides when folded, each side having asquare overlapping flap at its ends to form a completely-closed tube of four thicknesses at its top and bottom, integral caps fitting over said aps and enveloping the sides of the package, oblong sealing-strips arranged over said liaps and extended below the same to engage the side f the package, and a side wrapper inclosing the edges of the caps and theends of the sealing-strips, substantially as described.
2. In a box or package, the combination of a box made from an integral blank and having overlapping top and bottom flaps, each of a size to completely close the top and bottom. to form a completely-closed tube, integral caps fitting over said iaps and enveloping the sides of the package near its ends, oblong sealing-strips arranged over said caps, the ends of said sealing-'strips being carried on opposite sides of the package below the caps and a side wrapper inclosing the edges of the caps and the ends of the sealing-strips. In testimony whereof I aftlx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
iFREDERIC W. DYE. Witnesses: Y
