Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEoEGE E. vicxEEY, oE HYDE PARK, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BoxEs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,549, dated April 7, 1874 application filed January 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoEGE H. VIcxEEY, of Hyde Park, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Paper Box; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this speciication, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the inner box without the Wrapper. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the outside of the wrapper. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the inner side'of the wrapper. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the boxinclosed by the wrapper, before cutting the latter to form the lid; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view, showing the wrapper cut and theV lid opene Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the saine parts. This invention relates to that classof pasteboard or paper boxes for commercial purposes in which the ,body of the box is inclosed in a wrapper, the whole forming a sealed package. The object of my invention'- is to provide for public use, and especially for those engaged in the manufacture of such articles as are sold in packages, a box and wrapper which shall constitute a sealed water-proof package until its contents are required for use by the consunier, and a box with a hinged and partiallyclose cover after the package has been opened.
To this end my invention consists in the peculiar method of applying the wrapper to the box and cutting saidwrapper to form a cover after it has been applied, all of wh ich I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A represents a box of pasteboard or other like matr-rial, the sides and ends the upper end of the box when the wrapper is in place and extend part way down the sides. The outside of the wrapper is provided with a line or figure, E E, printed thereon, so that, when ythe wrapper is in place, said figure extends around three sides of the box, a short distance below its top and intersects the interposed strip D.
It will be seen that the box thus inclosed is sealed in the ordinary manner, the wrapper adhering to all parts of the box, excepting those covered by the interposed strip.
When the consumer desires to open the box an incision is made along the line E, cutting the wrapper andv interposed strip through to the surface of the box. The cover of the box is thus separated from three sides of the wrapper, the fourth side forming the hinge. As
before stated, the inner surface of the strip D has no adhesive material, and consequently does not adhere to the surface of the box; hence the cover is free to be opened, the downwardly-projecting portion of the wrapper constituting a iiangc v4which prevents the cover from opening of its own accord, and excludes the air from the interior.
rIhe lineE at the sides of the box is inclined upward to the corners at each end, as shown at E', so that the only connection between the cover and wrapper is along the corner.
B y this means a cheap and serviceable package is produced, which can be readily converted into a box with a hinged cover, and is adapted particularly to holding spices, powders, &c.
The wrapper, being made of water-proof paper and adheringto the box, renders the latter tight, and protects its contents effectually from dampness before the cover is cut.
I claim as my invention- The wrapper C, provided on its inner side with the interposed strip D, and having on its outer side a line indicating the pla-ce for cutting to form the cover, in combination with a pasteboard or other box, all constructed and combined substantially as described.
