To ALL WHOM 1T MAY ooNcERN:
Be it known that I, ANDREW THOMPSON, of Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello, and State of Iowa, have kinvented a new and useful improvement in Harness-Trace Attachment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section, taken on the line x 2:, iig. 1.

The nature of this invention consists in attaching to a. harness-trace a metal point or end having ratchetteeth or a series of projections ou the upper side, which catch a clamp for fastening the trace, as hereinafter described. v
A is the leather tug-strap, with the trace-loop a, and B a metal point, with ratchet-teeth b b on the upper side, pointing backwards, and a loop, h, at the rear end for-securing the end of a. leather trace. The tug-strap is fastened to the front bar of an ordina-ry buckle-frame, c, provided with loops for connecting with the backstrap, &c., in the usual manner. To this frame c is swivelled at the front end a. looped metal clamp or catch, d, which rides upon the metal trace-point B, and sets in one of the ratchet-teeth b, to hold the trace that passes through it. A spring, e, is fastened to the under side of the clamp d to bind the trace or bear the clamp down in one of the teeth, and holdthe trace securely.
It will be seen that the metal pointon the trace`will be very easily attached and detached, and will be very durable and economical. Leather traces are liable to tear out at the holes; and as they require the best quality ofleather they are an expensive part of the harness. The first cost of the trace with my improved metal point will also be greatly reduced, as the necessity for having the trace double and stitched will be dispensed with, a good single-leather trace having a metal point being as good in all respects as the best double-leather trace.
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A metal harness-trace point, B, having ratchet-teeth b b, or their equivalents, clamp, d, for fastening the trace, herein described.
point and clamp together,
in combination with a springconstrcted, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose ANDREW THOMPSON.
