Description
@uiten tates atent @Hirn IMPROVED TUG-HOLDER.
@in dnhule tnnmh tu im tins intn's jntmt mit making pnt nf tige same 'l`O ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. BOTTOMLEY, of Burlington, Racine county, Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Tug-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to an attachment to the harnesses of horses for holding the tugs or traces when unhitched from the whiie-tree, and thus obviating the necessity of tying them in a knot or knots,`which oftentimes causes the traces to crack, as well also as thc throwing of the traces over the back of the horse, from which, by the walking or motion ofthe horse, they frequently fall or drop, and thereby become entangled.l
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved holder for tugs or traces is illustrated- Figure 1 being a side view of the same, and
Figure 2 a 'plan or top view.
A. in the drawings, represents my improved holder for tugs or traces. This holder consists of a base or disk, B, with a slot or opening. C, through which is passed the strap called the crupper of the harness, that lends or runs from the centre of the saddle-tree along the back of the horse to the tail, by which strap the holder A is attached to the harness, and when in position is at or near the point where the hip-straps cross the' said cru] per-strap. C, a centre upright post onflisk B, which post has two side uprightcurved arms D, forub ing one part of jaws E, the other part of which is composed of spring-levers or arms F, hung so as to swing upon the upper end of the centre post C, these levers F closing upon the upper ends ofthe curved arms D, and acting to hold within the openings H, embraced by such arms, thc tug or trace-straps, when inserted or passed therein, by pressing them inward.
By a holder for traces or tugs of the construction above described the tying of the traces into a knot when unhitched is obriated. and a means is provided by which they can be held free of the ground, and thus out of the way ofthe horses feet and legs while walking or moving.
Having,r thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A holder for tags or traces of harnesses, constructed and applied to harnesses.substantially as and for the purpose described. n
The above specification of my invention signedl by me this 26th day of February, 1867.
THOMAS J. BOTTOMLEY.
