UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD PATON SPENOE, OF SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND.
DOOR-STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 671,899, dated April 9, 1901.
Application filed September 18, 1900. Serial No. 30,428. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD PATON SPENcE, marine su perintendent,a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Empress Chambers, Southampton Docks, in the county borough of Southampton,England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Stops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door-stops for holding doorssuch as housedoors, ships-cabin doors, and the likein a partly open or open position; and it consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus in its holding position, shown fitted to a door and in broken-off parts for convenience of size in the drawing. Fig. 2 is a front view of the apparatus as it appears when in a raised position and the door is free to be moved. Fig. 3 is an end view of the apparatus. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a lever device for actuating the apparatus. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of an eccentric device for actuating the apparatus.
Similarletters referto similarparts throughout the several views.
With reference to the drawings, a designates the door, shown in broken-off parts, and b denotes the spindle and handle of the doorlatch.
c is the door-stop bolt, the lower part of which is tubular and the upper part, which ships into it, solid, so that the bolt can be adjusted and fixed by a set-screw d to suit the height or position of the latch-handle of different doors.
e represents the brackets by which the bolt 0 is held to the door a and in which the bolt 0 is free to move vertically.
f is the india-rubber or like pad, which is fixed on the lower end of the bolt 0 and which in its normal position is pressed against the floor, which is designated by g, by means of a spiral spring h, which is placed on the bolt 0, between the india-rubber pad f and the lower bracket 6. The bearing-hole in the top bracket e is made square to prevent the bolt a turning, and the top of the bolt 0 is provided with a square extension-piece 2', having an arm j.
Fixed on the latch spindle or handle b of the door a, I provide a cam or like device is, which connects with the arm j on the bolt 0 in such a manner that when the latch handle or spindle b is turned to open or move the door a the device is automatically lifts the bolt 0 against the action of the spring h, and thereby raises the india-rubber pad f from contact with the floor 9, and the door is free to be opened, and when opened the required distance and on the release of the latch-handle the spring it forces the bolt 0 down and presses the pad f firmly against the floor g, and the door a is held open in the required position. To close the door, the handle I) is again turned, and the bolt 0 thereby raised, and the door is free to be closed.
The top bracket e and the extension part 2' are provided with holes m, and a pin n is provided, so that by inserting the pin n in the holes m the bolt 0 can be held in a raised or lowered position.
I prefer to carry out the feature of my invention-namely, the raising of the bolt O by means of the cam device is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3; but .the same action can be obtained by using the lever device is shown in Fig. 4 or the eccentric device is shown in Fig. 5.
I am aware that prior to my invention doorstops have been made in the form of handbolts provided with india-rubber pads to hold the door open in any position by contact with the floor. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and dedoor-catch and adapted to engage said arm sire to secure by Letters Patent, isfor operating said bolt. :0
In a door-stop, an adjustable spring-actu- In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my ated bolt, a flexible pad carried on the lower hand in presence of two Witnesses. 5 end thereof, a squared extension connected EDWARD PATON SPENCE.
to the upper end of said bolt, an arm formed Witnesses: integral with said extension, in combination FREDERICK JOHN OHEESBROUGH,
with a cam mounted upon the spindle of a FRANK JOHNSON.
