To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. HER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Window stops and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device which will permit a window to be opened slightly but which will prevent the same being opened a greater degree from the outside.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a stop for the window which is so constructed that it requires the services of both hands in order to move the device from a locked to an unlocked position thus making it impossible to operate the device from outside. 1
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view of one portion of the window showing the device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through a window frame showing the attachment in side elevation. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4, Fig. 2.
This invention is used in connection with the upper sash 10 and is intended to prevent the lower sash 11 from being raised or the upper sash from being lowered. The upper sash 10 is provided with a vertically extending pocket 12 having an enlarged outer end portion so that a plate 13 may be secured in the enlarged outer end portion, thus being countersunk. The plate is provided with two openings 14 and 15, the stop 16 being pivotally mounted between the pivot lugs 17 and protruding through the opening 15. This stop is provided with a hook 18 at its lower end which is adapted to be engaged by a locking catch so that the stop may be held in either a locked or released position.
A shaft 19 having a reduced end portion 20 is slidably mounted in the lugs 21 and 22, a coil spring 23 being coiled about the reduced end 20 so that the catch will be normally held in a raised position. A hook 24 is formed at the upper end of the shaft 19 and is adapted to interlock with the hook 18 in order to hold the stop 16 in the extended position, thus causing the stop to extend outwardly so that the sash may not be raised or lowered.
A lug 25 extends from the shaft 19 through the opening lt in order that the shaft 19 may be lowered to permit the stop to be swung inwardly to permit the window to be opened. In order to move the stop from the locked to the unlocked position it is necessary to grasp the stop with one hand and after drawing it outwardly a small amount press the lug 25 downwardly, thus lowering the shaft 19 and permitting the shaft to be swung inwardly. The lug 25 is then released and the spring raises the shaft so that it comes in contact with the stop and prevents the stop from swinging outwardly. When it is desired to return the stop to a locked position the shaft 19 is again lowered and the upper portion of the stop pushed inwardly, thus swinging the lower end portion outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A device of the character described comprising a plate provided with upper and lower openings, pivot lugs formed upon the inner face of said plate upon opposite sides of said upper opening, a stop pivotally mounted between said lugs and adapted to pass through the upper opening and having its lower end portion formed into a hook, perforated lugs positioned above and below the lower opening, a detent passing through said perforated lug and having its lower end portion reduced, a spring coiled about the reduced end portion of said detent and normally holding said shaft in a raised position to engage said stop for holding the same in an adjusted position, and means eX- tending from said detent through the lower opening to permit said detent to be moved vertically for permitting adjustment of said sto 1 h testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
