Description

@with tstes @anni @fitta lr. M. WOODCOCK, 0F AUBURN, NEW Y ORK.
Letters Patent No. 66,930, dated July 16, 1867. i
MPROVED RAILWAY-CHAIR.
tlge .rlgrbule referat tu in tlgese Stetten nteut ma mailling mi uf tige time TO ALL WHOM'IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, L. M. WOUDCOGK, of Auburn, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure '1 represents an end view of the rail and chairs, when adjusted in their proper places.
Figure 2 is an end view of the auxiliary chair, and i i Figure 3 an end view of the main chair.
Thevnature of my invention consists in the employment of two separate chairs, one resting Vin the other, and both connecting and supporting the rails, as hereinafter set forth and described. I
a represents one end of the ordinary T rail. b is the main chair, which rests upon and is secured to crosstief by means of two bolts or spikes d d, one of which is shown in fig. 1. c represents the auxiliary chair, the dove-tail opening through it being just largeenough' to admit the rail, while the opening in the main chair is sui'liciently large to admit the auxiliary chair.
It will be particularly observed thatthe opening in the main chair along the sides near its base is wider at one end than at the other, while the external sides ofthe auxiliary chair are wedge-shaped. Thus, when the ends ofthe rails are inserted and the auxiliary chair is driven or forced into its proper position, the rails will be drawn together and securely held. e represents the movable pin or bolt, which passes through both chairs into the cross-tie. The opposite sides of these chairs should have the exact curve of the rails, and should extend almost to the top of them, in order to give 'them brace and support equally upon both sides.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-' The main chair b, in combination with theauxiliary chair c, constructed andiused substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I set my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
L. M. WOODCOCK.
Witnesses:
S. C. Herr, WM. CLARK.
