Description

E. H. EBERMAN'. RAIL JOINT SPLIGE l Patented Feb. 25, 1868.
@uiten ,tetes stent ffpm Letters Patent No. 74,900, dated February 251868.
IMPROVED j RAILROAD RAIL-J OIN T SPLIG.
tlg'e rbehule :mmh fr nthis: @titers mnt un 'nuttig putt nf the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, EDMUND EBERMAN, of- Lampeter Square, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, vhaveinvented a, new` and improved Mode to Securethe Joining of Rails on` Railroads; and I doV hereby declare that the following is a-full and exaetdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga part ofthis specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a'por'speetiveview of a. joint secured by'my device.
Figure 2 the same, with joining removed, to show the formation 4of the 4double dove-tailed opening between the abutting ends of two rails l Figure 3,' one end shown separated.
Figures 4, front 4vvie'w of two djoining rails, with. thel two anged and'donble dove-tailed solid plugs B B', the headed holtfC, hwith the screw-nut D detached, showing the outer and inn-er face ofsaid plugs vB.
Figure showsthe saule, appliedlby a long screwgholt or Irodto unite rails across the track on curves, to prevent lateral'pressure.
Figure-6, a section, showing the two plugs tomeet centrally in the rail, a'nd'the bolt and nut in place. n
The nature of my in veution'is to provide a'means of uniting two abutting rails or iron beams, .so as'to bind ihrevery direction, and supplying n solid, compact .filling tothe portion cut away. The drawings are so full as 1o clearly show my invention, and to enable any one skilled in tho art to make and use the same itis only necessary to say,` that by means of a die the dove-'tail slot can be cu't' out'of theends of each rail, as shown, the plugs being of one size and configuration. When both sides of the rail-have t'liesame curve that they can also be made by machinery, and when properly constructed, and the ends of the rails cut, it is only necessary to 'insert one from each side they will ill'up, each half way, the double dove-tailed opening 4) made by the union of two rails. B, the outer ilange, convexlon the inner face, tocloselyriit up t-the sides of the concave' rail. b, the ,double dove-tailed filling. .Both plugsB B ore bolted together bya'stoutdieaded screw-bolt, 0,1
and secured and firmly drawn together by the nut D, as shown by iig. 6. The nature of this uni-ou is such that it combinesfthe two rails as if in onecontinuous piece, prevents yielding by its adaptation to resist, in every possible direction, all strain 4upon the joint, and applicable to secure iron joints on bridges, buildings, site. I am not aware that a connecting-plug, with'ailange, B, `straight on the outer face, and double dove-tail 6,0? one uniform piece, perforated for a bolt, was ever employed to secure the joining of rails or other iron bars.
What I`claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l I,
The construction of the Banged and double dove-tailed brace and filling vor plugs B B', b', used jointly or severally,` in combination withthe bolt G'andnutD and dove-tailed slot a cut in 'the rail,'all arranged in the manner shown for' thepurpose specified.
` 4E.4 H. EBERMAN.
