Be it known that R. F. BOCMSDES, of Wallingford, New Haven county, Connecticnt, have inveutedla new and improved'BottleStopper; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'descupi tion thereof,which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to tll' accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which the drawing represents my' improved bot'tlr l stopper, as applied toa bottle. The object of this invention is to provide a convenient land perfect `stopper forl bottles or decanters, and" consists in an n'dimrubber cylinder of 'proper shapeito fit the mouth and neck of the bottle or (lecanter, whicli':

is fitted around a Inetal tube for receiving a' screw fastened into'the head of the stopper. v The stopper is inserted in the bottle when the screw is partly withdrawn, and the India-rubber cylinder iselongated by its elasticity so that it enters easily, and the screw is then turned Vfor-the purpose'of. compressing thelndia. rubber and extend-v ingvit laterally, sotbat it shall fit in the neck of Ythebottle tightly and fill the sides completeleectually preventing the admission of air or the loss of the contents. The India-rubber stopper a is in cylindrical form, and is fitted to a metal tube, b, which'is flanged at the lower end for the support of the bottom of the India-rubber cylinder a, the upper end of which is cut to receive a screw, c, fastened to`or forming a part of the head d, which may also be made of 'metal or-of glass, or .any other suitable material. ,The head may be made hollow, in connection with the tube b, for pouring liquids from a bottle without removing the stopper. It is obvious that when the screw c is withdrawn fromthe tube b, the India-rubber'cylinder a may -be formed to expand and enter the mouth and'neck of a bottle easily,'while if the screwis screwed into the tube, the ndiarubber cylinder will expand laterallyby compression, andfitithe bottle tightly.

4Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The tube b, 'the upper end cut to receive the screw c of the hollow head having a hinged :cap`, the lower end auged to support the rubber cylinder a, all constructed and arranged in such a manner that the liquid shallA be discharged fromzthe bottle without removing the stopper, as herein shown and described.
