W. H. NICHOLS, OF EAST HAMPTON, CONNECTICUT.v
Letters Patent No. 65,689, ama` .im 11, 1867..
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGH-BELLS.
TO ALL WHOM IT M AY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. H. NICHOLS, of East Hampton, in the vcounty of Middlesex, and VState'of Connee tient, have invented new and improved Sleigh-Bells; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, andexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forzninga part of this specification, in which Figure I is a sectional view of my improved bell, showing it as it comes from the mould. Figure 2 is a similar View, the bell being attached to a leather strap. Figure Sis a bottom view of the leather to which any bell is attached. This invention relates to a new manner .of attaching the wire or pin, by which sleigh-bells are secured to leather straps, to the said bell. l i
My invention consists in at once casting the wires or pins in the bells; that is to say, the complete Wire or pin is inserted into the mould, and the bell is then cast around the same, so that tlhe said wires or pins will afterwards be securely held. i
l I-Ieretofore thewires or pins were riveted to the bell, lfor which purpose va hole had to bebored through the bell. The ginglet or tongue very soon wears olf the headof these rivets, and the bell drops off.
A is the bell B is a wire staple, which is east with the bell; that is to say, I cast the bell around and upon the ends of the staple. This staple is afterwards cut open, so that two pins a a are left on the bell, as shown inl fig. 2. These two pins are then placed through the holes in the leather strap C, and in a. metal plate, b, and are then riveted to the said metal plate, as shown in figs. 2 and 3.
One pin may be used instead of two, and I do not wish to claim any particular kinder style of fastening whereby the bell is secured to the strap. l
Having thus described my invention,4 what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Casting a shank of twoormore or less pins a a in and with the sleigh-bell A, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
' W. H. NICHOLS.
