CABLE-HANGER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,983, dated July 31, 1900.
Application filed June 11,1900.
To aZZ whom it mag concern:
Belt known that I, JAMES C. HYDE, of West Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Cable-Hanger; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings andthe letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side View of a cable-hanger constructed in accordance with my invention and illustrating the manner of opening the same; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same in the closed position; Fig. 3, a rear view illustratingthe manner of unlocking the loop member from the hook.
This invention relates to an improvement in cable-hangers or devices for supporting electric cables between the poles.
In running large cables for telephone, feeders for trolley-lines, &c., it is customary'to string a guy-wire between the posts and then hang the cable to that wire by means of suitable hangers arranged at short intervals between the posts.
The object of this invention is to provide a hanger which is simple in construction, easily applied, and one not liable to accidental displacement; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
The hanger consists of two parts, which for convenience I will term the hook and the loop. As herein shown, the hook is formed from a single piece of wire bent to form a straight bar A and sides B B, which are arranged substantially parallel with each other and inset from the ends of the bar A, so as to form shoulders C. These side bars B are transversely bowed and at their outer ends bent to form hooks D. The loop is also formed from a single piece of wire bent to form a lockingbar E and having substantially-parallel sides F, which are longitudinally bowed into substantially-semicircular form, and the outer ends turned around the bar A and forming loops or eyes G. The parts are soproportionedthat when the hooks D engage with the locking-bar E the eyes G Serial No. 19,812. (No we.)
will pass below the shoulders C, and the nat- V hooks D on the locking-bar E. The hook member hangs from the guy-wire and the cable passes through the loop. If desired, and in order to prevent the wires from wearing on the cable, a sheet-metal strap H may be employed, which will consist of a thin piece of metal formed with ears I at one end, which are bent around the sides of the loop, the other end being free, so that the eyes G may be moved inward independent of the strap. Instead of the metal strap a strip of wood or other material may be employed.
To disengage the hooks D from the lockingbar E, the eyes G. are moved toward each other and out of engagement with the shoulders C,as shown in Fig. 3, which permits the hook member to be moved downward and so that the hooks D pass beneath the bar E, as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1. When the loop has been placed around the cable and the hook over the guy-wire,the said hooks are snapped under the locking-bar Eand the eyes G pass beneath the shoulders O and so as to firmly lock the members together.
It will be seen that both the hook and loop members may be readily formed from wire and at a very low cost of manufacture. The hangers are readily applied and reduce the possibility of accidental displacement to the minimum.
Having fully described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- i 1. The herein-described cable hanger, consisting of a hook member comprising a bar, sides and hooks, said sides inset from the ends of the said bar, and aloop member comprising a bar adapted for engagement with said hooks, and formed at its opposite ends with eyes through which the bar of the hook extends, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described cable-hanger, consisting of a hook member formed from a sin gle piece of wire, and comprisinga ba'rfsides and hooks, said sides inset from jtheends of the said bar, and a loop made from a single piece of wire and com'prisihg'a ba'r adapted for engagement with the said hooks, and formed at its opposite ends with eyes through whiolr the bar ofthe ilOOkgOXtBIldS, substantially as described."
3. The herein-described cable-hanger, consisting of a hook member comprising a bar,
sides and hooks, said sides inset from the ends of the said bar, aclQOpimember\comprisingra1t bar adapted for'engagement with said hooks,
and formed at its opposite ends with eyes o through which the bar of the hookextends;
