Description
T. W. HARVEY.
Gun Lock.
Patented June 19. 1849.
NJ'ETERS. PNOTO-LITNDGRAPHEH, WASHINGTON. n C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOS. W. HARVEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK GOODALL.
ROTATING-TUMBLER GUN-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,537, dated June 19, 1849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. HARVEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Look for Firearms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
I have given to my invention the name of a rotating tumbler lock, which consists in being so formed as to raise and impinge the hammer, by a forward and continuously rotating movement of the tumbler.
To construct the same, the periphery of a disk is cut into cam-like notches across its face; an arm of the hammer is made to fit into, and works against the face of these notches, and by turning the tumbler by the action of the trigger-the hammer is gradually raised until the tumbler has moved one division of its notches, at which time the end of the arm of the hammer is forced into the next succeeding notch, by the action of the main spring, and perform its work, after which the trigger and catch, alternates backtaking hold of the next succeeding notch at the opposite side from the arm of the hammer, and when again pulled, continues to move forward the rotation of the tumbler and repeats the operation continuously as above stated.
A, is the tumbler, revolving on pin a; B, is the hammer, turning on pin b; 0 is the arm of the hammer; C, is the trigger, turning on pin 0; D, is the trigger catch, jointed to trigger by the pin cl; E, is the main spring; and F, is the trigger spring, both secured in usual way. I have shown these parts as arranged in the breech and handle of an ordinary pistol the same may be put on to a separate lock plate.
What I claim as new and desire to secure in Letters Patent is 1. The revolving tumbler A, having a continuous rotating forward movement, by which the hammer B, is raised and allowed to escape through the intervention of a series of notches acting as cams on the arm 0, of the hammersubstantially as described and expressly as applied to gun locks.
2. I also claim the said tumbler as described and shown, in combination with the hammer B, trigger C, catch D, and springs E and F.
