Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT 1 oEEicE.
LINUS YALE, OF NEWPORT, NEW YORK.
BANK-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,584, dated February 28, 1854:.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LINUS YALE, of Newport, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lock for Safes, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be al full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings annexed and forming part of this specification.
A is the case in which is Yfitted to slide the bolt B being driven or moved by the cam C which is turned by the sliding shaft D having a large head D and cross-pin E. The cover F has a projecting hub G with a sunken chamber H in the face for the reception of the key K which may be completely covered and concealed by the large head D of the shaft D when it is pushed back against the hub G. Opposed to this hub on the cover is a similar hub C on the cam C. The joint formed by the junction of the cover F and the cam-C being close, is crossed by siX jointed pins or stops VI driven by helical springs J. These pins project into the key-chamber H sufficiently to be depressed 'by the key K. This key K is a semicircular piece of metal fitted to the chamber H, being crescent shaped' to fit theshaft D and chamber wall. It is pierced with holes corresponding in number and position with the stops I I and to different depths corresponding to the different lengths of the pins so that when the key is pressed upon them their` joints are on the same plane with the joint between the coverand cam, and when so depressed of course no longer obstruct the movements of the cam.
The shaft D has a cog L for connecting it to the cam C while driven back, and holding it from revolving while drawn forwardto open the chamber for the reception of the key. The cam C and cover F are each provided with a. notch M for the reception of the said cog. v
When the key is put into the chamber and the sha-ft driven back the stops are necessarily arranged to admit ,of the cam revolving at the same time the cog L is forced from the cover which prevented its revolving into the cam which by it is revolved thereby causing a movement of the bolt B by the cam striking the part B of the bolt B.
It will be seen that while the shaft is drawn forward the cog L occupies the notch M in the cover F and prevents turning the shaft to get a pressure on the pins by which Y LINUs YALE'.
