IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH NATHAN, ofthe city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a vfull and correct description ofthe same, suiicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains te understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my device in line x ce, tig. 2.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same; and
Figure 3 shows attached parts of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature ot my invention consists in providing bottles which are to contain soda-water, beer, or any other liquids of effervescent nature, or any liquids which require tight eorking, with a stopper which can be withdrawn in a moment without any great exertion, and remain attached to the bottle, and by means of which such liquids can be bottled by one man, which operation new requires at least three.
In the drawing, A may representthe neck of any common soda-water or beer bottle, provided near its mouth with a shoulder, a. Around the neck ot' the bottle, and bearinr against th-eishoulder a, is a wire, I3, the ends of which are twisted or secured in anywell-known manner. On this wire B are fastened two small blocks I), provided at their outer side with pins c which form the pivots and bearings of the lower ends of the yoke or bow C, which at its top and Centre has a circular piece, D, provided with a hole in its centre, into which is cut a female screw-thread. Through this hole passes n screw, E, provided at its top with a thumb-piece, e, and at its lower part with a circular piece, d, which moves loosely under a metal plate,f, to which is secured acireular India-rubber plate, g. The screw E need be provided with but a very short screw-thread, only sufficient to give one full turn of the thumb-piece e to either withdraw the stopper or tighten it on the bottle. The balance of the shank of thc'sci'ew E may be made smooth, as shown in iig. I, so that in uncorking a bottle it is but necessary to turn the thumb-piece a once, when the stopper can be lifted straightly up from the mouth of the bottle.
Bottle-Stoppers new in common use necessitate the use of a cork which is Vlost when the bottle is opened, as the corks rot by thc Contact with the iluid in the bottle. By my deviee the use and loss of eorks are ebviated, as my stopper always remains attached to the bottle. In bottling el'ervescent and other liquids, one man fills the bottle, which is then passed over to another man, who insert-s the cork, and in turn passes it to a third one,
who attaches or secures the wire to hold the cork down. In using my device one man can perform the whole work. After filling the bottle it is only necessary to press down the stopper until the screw-thread touches the piece I), when one turn of the thumb-piece e wili tightly' cork the bottle.
In practice I propose to cast the wire D and blocks I in one piece, and spring the yoke or bow into the pins a, which will greatly reduce the cost of the manufacture. The device can be madeat a less cost than the combined cost of the eorks and wires. new in use, together with that of the employment of two men, which I dispense with infmy device for bottling. I may also place springs between the under side of the" yoke or bow C and the top plate of the stopper, which shall lift the stopper as soon as the screw is unscrewed.
II-aviugthns described lnyinveut-ion, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The screw E, the lower partei' its shank being: made smooth, substantially as and for the purpose described; Y
2. The blocks I on the wire ,13, constructed and arranged substantially as described. 2l. The combination of the wire D, blocks (l, yoke C, screw E with the lower part of its sha-nk made smooth, und stopperfg, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' lhe above specification of my improvement in bottle-Stoppers signed this seventh day of May, ISU?.
JOSEPH NATHAN.
