LEO II. IVISE, OF NETV YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT GUSSET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 652,574, dated June 26, 1900.
Application filed August 25,1899. Serial No. 728,428. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEO I-I. WISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New Yorkand State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvementin the construction of nether garments; and its object is to provide a pair of drawers, overalls, or similar nether garment which will be comfortable and allow the wearer to freely bend his body at the hips and also his legs at the knee without uncomfortable binding restraint.
I am aware that nether garments have heretofore been made of various materials of a comparatively-inelastic nature and having elastic strips inserted at various parts to enable the garment to yield. My invention, however, does not consist in this broad idea, but in a special arrangement of the elastic insertion-strips whereby a new and useful result is effected.
It is well known that heretofore when the legs of a pair of drawers are secured at their lower ends around a wearers legs by the usual cuffs, strings, or the like the wearer will find difficulty in bending his legs at the knee, because the drawers-legs will not yield sufficiently in a longitudinal direction and will Figure 1 is a front view of a pair of drawers embodying my invention, and. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
The body portion of the drawers has the usual waistband B and the two sides A, of which the'legs are formed.
0 designates a separate seat-piece, which is of one piece of fabric and is without central seam. Its upper end is attached to the waistband B, and its lower end has two ta pered tangs separated by a \l-notch. This notch conforms to the crotch of the drawers, and one tang is stitched to the inseam c of one leg and the other tang in like manner to the other leg. The opposite edges of the seatpiece G are connected to the body by a strip of elastic insertion d, which latter is stitched to the said seat-piece and body portion. The two elastic insertion-strips d extend from the waistband 13 down the back of the drawers each side of the seat-piece O and its tangs to'the inseam of the drawers-legs below the crotch. Each strip d then extends in the form of a curve across the front a of the leg at a point approximately at or just below the knee to the opposite or outer side of the leg and thence down to the bottom, where it terminates in the present instance in a cuff. By
thus extending the strip of elastic insertion across the knee I provide elasticity in both a longitudinal and sidewise direction, which enables the wearer to bend his knee with comfort.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is---- 1. As a new article of manufacture, anether garment comprising a body portion and legs; and a strip of elastic insertion extending down one side of each leg and across the leg approximately at the knee to the opposite side, and thence downwardly to the bottom, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a nether garment comprising a body portion and legs; and a strip of elastic insertion extending down the inseam of each leg approximately to the knee, and thence curving downwardly across the leg to the opposite side thereof as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described nether garment, comprising a body portion and legs; a seat-piece; a strip of elastic insertion extending down each side of said seat-piece and along the inseam of each leg, and then 0 urving downwardly across the leg, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I EtffiX my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
LEO ll. YVISE.
