SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,181, dated July 19, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STANISLAUS J. KEMPIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to garments, and is especially adapted for use with a form thereof commonly termed overalls.

The object of my invention is to provide means for readily attaching a garment to the person of a wearer thereof and to retain said garment in its proper position when in use.

Certain garments are most commonly used for outer wear to prevent other and generally more valuable garments from becoming either soiled, torn, or otherwise damaged when the persons who wear them are engaged for a time in occupations which involve more than ordinary risk in that direction. As it is generally desirable that such garmentsas, for instance,

' overalls or jumpers, so called-shouldbe either donned or discarded quickly, I have adopted for the purpose of attaching them to the person of the wearer the device which embodies my invention and which may be operated in much less time than is required to either button, buckle, or tie such fastenings as are commonly used for the purpose mentioned.

I have herein illustrated my invention by drawings which show but one form of garment; but the adaptation of the former to and its use in connection with other forms of garments will be readily understood by means of said drawings, in connection with the descriptive part of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a garment to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said garment. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a spring.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents in a general way a pair of overalls of the general form of trousers, to which, as shown, is attached a bib 2, which has a neckband 3. The overalls 1 may be formed of any suitable numtions of the former.

ber of pieces of textile fabric properly joined to form a garment of the form shown, which shall be openable longitudinally, preferably at the back thereof and from the top of the waist portion 4 to the bottom of the legs 5 5, there being in the garment shown three several openings-namely, one referred to herein as I in the waist portion 4 and two which bifurcate therefrom and are referred to herein as 5 5 and extend downwardly to the bottoms 5 of the legs 5. Springs 6, 7 8, and 9, respectively, formed of a single relatively thin piece of material and of the curved form shown in a general way in Fig. 4, but dimensionally differing to adapt them for use in their several positions, are respectively shown in the order named attached to the waist, thigh, and leg portions of the overalls bymeans of coverings of suitable material, such as cloth or tape, herein referred to as 6, 7, 8', and 9, respectively, and which are so stitched or otherwise secured to the overalls as to inclose the several springs between them, respectively, and the material of the garment. The springs may be made of any suitable resilient material; but I prefer metal which is properly protected from oxidationas, for instance, by a coating of Japan varnish. The springs may readily be removed from the garment at the openings 4' 5 and replaced therein by either withdrawing them longitudinally from or inserting them endwise into the ends, respectively, of the spaces in which they are severally located, as before mentioned.

The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. A garment such as that shown in the drawings may be properly attached to the person of a wearer by first passing a free end of the neckband 3 around the neck and fastening the same in any suitable manner. The springs 6, 7 8, and 9 may then in the order named be first opened and afterward clasped about the person of the wearerin the several normal posi- In order to remove the garment from the person, the springs should be unclaspe'd and detached in a reversed order from that before described.

I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a pair of overalls cut away on the sides and back above the Waist to present a front bib portion 2 and a supporting-neckband 3 integral therewith, an encircling waist portion 4:, and encircling leg portions 5 the waist portion having a central straight longitudinal opening 4 at the back, and the leg portions having curved longitudinal openings 5 at the back, of springs connected to and encircling said parts and arranged to normally hold together the edges of the garment along said openings, said springs attached by means of a strip of material placed thereon and each sewed along its longitudinal edges, substantially as described.

The combination with a pair of overalls cut away on the sides and back above the waist to present a front bib portion 2 and a supporting-neckband 3 integral therewith, an encircling waist portion 4, and encircling leg portions 5 the waist portion having a central straight longitudinal opening 4: at the back, and the leg portions having curved longitudinal openings 5 at the back, of springs connected to and encircling said parts, their ends extending to the edges of the garment along said openings and holding said edges together, said springs attached by means of a strip of material placed thereon and sewed along its longitudinal edges, substantially as described.
