CLOTHES-LINE HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,912, dated June 19, 1900.

Be it known that I, EPHRAIM H. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Clothes-Line Hooks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. a p

This invention relates to a hook adapted and designed for use as a support for clotheslines and which is secured to the side of a house or other building.

The invention has for its object to provide a strong and durable hook which is readily detachable from the building and which is neat in appearance. For this purpose the hook proper is made of wire, preferably galvanized, and the ends of the wire are inserted through a base, preferably of malleable iron, but which may be of cast or wrought iron or of other material, the said base being recessed on its back side or face, so that the ends of the wire may be bent over or clenched in said recess and lie within the rear face of the base, thereby enabling the latter to be placed flush or in close contact with the structure to which it is secured. The bent or clenched ends of the wire'hook firmly secure said hook to said base, and the latter may and preferably will have attached to it a lug or projection which is adapted to support the wire hook when a load is placed upon the clothes-line. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this.

In accordance with this invention a piece of galvanized or other wire is folded and bent to form the hook on, and the free ends of the wire are preferably twisted, as at b, and thereafter they are inserted through suitable openings c 01, near opposite sides of a base e, and bent or clenched against the rear side of said base, as indicated in Fig. 3. The base e may be of any suitable material, preferably malleable iron,which may be also galvanized. The base e, when made of metal, is preferably provided with a convexed central portion f,which forms a recess g, in which the clenching ends with a small rearwardly-projecting lip m,

which is adapted to sink into the wood when the said base is secured thereto by screws inserted through the holes n in said base, there by efiectin'g a water-tight joint between said base and the house and protecting the rear portion of the base and the screws from corrosion. The central portion f of the base may and preferably will have attached to its front face a lug or projection 0, which is below and in line with the hook a and which acts as a support for the wire hook when subjected to strain, as when the clothes-line is loaded with clothes.

The clothes-line hook above described is strong and durable, besides being neat and attractive in appearance. I may prefer to make the base of malleable iron; but I do not desire to limit my invention in this respect, as it may be made of cast-iron or, if desired, of non-metallic material.

To save material and improve the appearance of the base, I prefer to make the central portion convexed; but it is evident that the front face of the base may be flat and the base made of sufficient thickness to permit the recess g to be formed on its rear face.

I claim- 1. In an article of the class described, the

combination with a base provided on its front face with a projection or lug, of a wire hook attached to said base and adapted to be supported by said lug or projection, substantially as described.

2. In an article of the class described, the combination with a metal base having a convexed central portion forming a recess on its rear side, and a lug or projection extended from the front side of said base, of a wire hook attached to said base and adapted to be supported by said lug or projection, substantially as described. 7
