UNITED STATES-- PATENT OFFICE.
ALICIA GOBMAN, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
WRAPPING CASE OR BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,710, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed December 22, 1899. Serial No. 741,320. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALICIA GORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Im provemont-s in lVrapping Cases or Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrapping cases or bags, the object of the same being to provide a device of this kind by means of which the operation of wrapping bundles may be facilitated and the use of a securing string or cord in this operation dispensed with.
The invention consists of a'wrapping case or bag having both ends open and constructed of a sheet of flexible wrapping material folded to bring the longitudinal edges thereof opposite each other, one of said edges being bent inwardly upon itself to form a pocket, and a strip of sheet metal in said pocket, the overlapping edges of said sheet being pasted or otherwise secured to each other.
The invention also consists in other features and details of construction ,which will be hereinafter 'more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which my improved case is made. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the complete case. is a cross-section through the same, and Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the ease in its closed condition.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
My improved case or bag has the body 1 thereof made from a sheet of flexible wrapping material, such as paper or the like, and has the longitudinal edges thereof straight throughout their entire length. The said sheet is folded so as to bring the longitudinal edges where the seam is formed directly opposite each other, one of said edges overlapping the other and bent inwardly upon itself to form a pocket 2. In this pocket is located a strip 3, ofsheet metal-such as tin, lead, or the like-the same being secured to the opposite sides of the pocketby paste or other suitable means. When the strip 3 is in place,
the edge of the sheet 1 in which it is located is thenpasted orotherwise secured to the other longitudinal edge of said sheet. The
case or package is now complete and ready for use, and it will be observed that by the Fig. 3'
construction described both ends of the case are open.
In using the case it is placed on the counter or other support with the seam along which the strip 3 is secured lowermost. The articles to be wrapped are then inserted into the case from one of its open ends, and afterward said ends are closed in the usual manner, with the extremities of the strip 3 bent, folded, or curled up around the upper sideof the package. The material of which the strip 3 is made is of such a nature that it can be readily bent into any position, but when so bent will remain in such position against all ordinary pressures. A package is thus produced which is secure enough for all prac tical purposes and without the use of binding cord or string. The time required for wrapping up a bundle in my improved case or bag is very much less than that required when cord or string is used, and an economy is therefore efiected not only in the cost of materials, but also in the time employed.
My improved case is especially adapted for use in wrapping such articles as dry goods, haberdashery, millinery, stationery, meats, and the like-in fact, everything except such articles as groceries and vegetables-and by reason of the fact that it has both ends open it is more cheaply constructed than the ordinary bag and is adapted for use with a wider range of articles to be wrapped.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrapping-case having both ends open, consisting of a sheet of flexible wrapping material folded to bring the longitudinal edges thereof opposite each other, both of said longitudinal edges being straight and one of the same being bent inwardly upon itself to form a pocket on its under side, and a strip of sheet metal in said pocket, extending the entire length of said case, the overlapping edges of said sheet being pasted or otherwise secured to" each other. y
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALICIA GORMAN. Witnesses:
J. T. SIDLEY, M. DOOLAN.
