SHUTTLE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Be it known that I, HENRY A. BATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates especially to the springs employed in sewing machine shuttles in connection with the cop. Heretofore in sewing-machine shuttles I have used friction-springs to prevent the cop revolving faster than the thread is unwound; but with these springs it was necessary to use a sleeve or equivalent device to keep the spring in place and prevent it falling out when the shuttle was opened to place a new cop in place. The construction of these two parts was expensive; and the object of myinventiou is to obviate the same.

In carrying out my invention I employ a spring of thin sheet metal having arms with ends curved to bear against the interior surface of the bobbin case and central outturned fingers to bear frictionally upon the tubular axis of the bobbin-case with a force sufficient to prevent the spring falling away from the bobbin case when the same is opened to place therein a new cop; but this friction is not sufficient to prevent the function of the spring in restraining the centrifugal rotation of the cop.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a sectional view, of my improved spring; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the shuttle-base, bobbin-case, and cop, showing the application of the spring.

d represents the spring, made with arms 3, having ends curved to bear against the interior surface of the bobbin-case, and also surface of the cop with sufficient force to restrain the centrifugal rotation of the cop as the-thread is unwound, so that the cop does not revolve faster than the thread is unwound. At the same time the fingers a bear with sufficient friction upon and around the tubular axis or portion 1) of the bobbin-case, so that when the said case is removed from the shuttle-base a for the purpose of inserting a new fresh cop the said spring will not fall out of the bobbin-case, but will maintain its position. The frictional action of the fingers 4, however, is not sufficient to prevent the action of the spring by-the arms 3, which action produces a longitudinal movement on the tubular axis or part b. The said fingers 4 bear only lightly upon the tubular axis or part b, and when the cop c is in place the same has a tendency to force the spring (1 against the inner surface of the bobbin-case 1). Thus the circular portion of the spring bears upon one-face of the cop to force the other face against the surface of the shuttlebase a to produce the requisite friction and holding action that prevent the bobbin revolving faster than the thread is unwound.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination in a sewing-machine shuttle, of the bobbin-case having a cop-support, the cop, a spring bearing against the bobbin-case and acting frictionally against the surface of the cop to retard the rotation of the same and such spring also having as a part of itself devices cooperating with said support by which it is frictionally maintained in position in the bobbin-case when the cop is removed and the parts separated, substantially asset forth.

In a sewing-machine shuttle, the coinbination with the shuttle-base having a pin, and the bobbin-case having a tubular axis or part connected therewith and fitting over the pin of the base, of a cop fitting freely around the said tubular axis or part of the bobbinoase, and a spring having arms bearing upon the inner surface of the bobbin-ease and outturned fingers bearing friotionally around the tubular axis or part of the ease and coming slightly Within the center of the cop, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a sewing-machine shuttle, the combination with the shuttle-base having a pin, of the bobbin-ease having a tubular axis adapted to fit over such pin, of a cop fitting freely around the said tubular axis of the bobbinease, and a spring of thin sheet metal having arms with ends curved to bear against the interior surface of the b0bbin-case and central outturned fingers to bear friotionally 11 p011 the tubular axis of the bobbin-ease with a force sufficient to prevent the spring falling 20 HENRY A.
