To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES LoUIs MILLER and FRANK BARR FREEMAN, citizens of the United States,residing at Norwood and Cincinnati, respectively, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbincases and Tensions; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it' appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bobbin cases, and more particularly to the tension devices applied to bobbin cases which are used in the shuttles of lockstitch shoe sewing machines.
One object of the invention is to Provide an improved tension device which may also be utilized to hold the bobbin in its operative position in the bobbin casing.
A furtherobject of the invention is to provide means for varying the amount of the tension upon the thread.
With the above objects in view one feature of the invention comprises means for fricl, tionally retarding the rotation ofythe bobbin, which in consequence produces a tension upon the thread as it is drawn from the bobbin. 7

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the bobbin case 1 is shown as mounted in one of the well known types of oscillating shuttle 2, which in turn is mounted in a shuttle race 3 as usual. The bobbin case 1 and shuttle 2 are held in proper operative position by the usual bobbin holding arm 4. The above described features and arrangement thereof are all old p and well known in the art, and are only brieflydescribed in consequence thereof.
In order that the bobbin may readily be inserted in operative position, the bobbin case 1 is open at one side. The bobbin 5 is 1 I rotati'vely mounted in the case by being journaled upon a hollow stud 6 which projects inwardly from the inner face of the bobbin case. A .pin or bolt 7 ismounted within the hollow stud 6 and is provided with a head 8 which projects beyond the outer face of the bobbin. The opposite end of the bolt 7 is threaded at 9.
It is preferred to secure a tension upon the-thread, by retarding the rotation of the g bobbin rather than by providing a separate tension device upon the bobbin case, which engages the thread as it leaves the bobbin.
The improved means provided for retarding the rotation of the bobbin, and which at the sametime'hold itin operative position in the bobbin case, comprise 'a fiat disklO adapted to engageone face .of the bobbin.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a casing having an opening in one side to receive a bobbin, a shaft carried by the opposite'side concentric of said opening to receive and carry a bobbin, nieansniounted on said shaft and extending therefrom toward the edge of the opening to retain the bobbin on the shaft, and spring-pressed means carried by said shaft for drawing said meansinward, said shaft being of less length than the bobbin to be used whereby the means for retaining the bobbin on the shaft will bear on the face of the bobbin under the influence of the spring action placing tension on the thread.
