IMPROVED BOLSTER FOR RAILRDAD GARS.
@Le tlgihulc tuant tu it time rttcts atrut :um mating putt tf tigt same.
TO ALL WHOM IT'MAY CONCERN Beit known that we, JOHN MARQUIS and JOHN W. KIMMELL, of Crestline, in the county of Crawford, and State of Ohio, have invented a. new and useful Oar Bolster 'or Railroad or other Cars; and we do hereby declare that the vfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of our invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the use of clamping-pieces, of novel construction, i'n connection with an inverted arch, of wood or iron, or any other suitable material, so arranged as to form an adjustable body bolster, by which any sagging arising from wear or any excessive loading of the car can be easily corrected.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i
Figure 1 is a sectional view, showing the application of the bolster to a common freight car.
Figure 2 is a side view ofvbolster and its connections.
Figure 3 is a plan of the same.
Figures 4, 5, and 6 are views of. the end pieces of bolster and connections, showing their application.
Figuresl 7, 8, and 9 are views ofconnecting-pieces. v
The bolster is composed of three pieces, A B O, of wood or other material, having the connecting-pieces D D between their adjacent ends, and the clamping-pieces F F at the extremities. The clamping-pieces F F have the flanges b ZJ, through which pass the connecting-bolts O O, having the nuts g g g g at the ends. The bolts O O may pass through-the connecting-pieces D D, as shown, or above or below them. The bearing-pieces E E are bolted to the side licor-beams R R by the bolts S S, and have the flanges t a a a, through which pass the tension-bolts N N, having nuts Q Q Q Q on the outside of the door-beam R R, which secure the car against any strain from thrust of the bolster, and also nuts V V V V, which serve to more irlnly connect the Hoor-beams R R and bearing-pieces E E.
The other oor-beamsR-R R R are bolted to the bolster as shown in iig. l. The plate Gr is attached to the bolster, and sits on the plate H, which sits on the piece of the car truck. The pieces L L are attached to the bolster, and directly below them on the car truck are placed the pieces K K at such a distance as to allow a small rocking motion to the car. The bolt M passes through the bolster and car truck, as shown in iig. l, firmly connecting them together. The ends of the bolster are fastened to the bearing-pieces E E by the bolts T T. By tightening the nuts g g g g any saggingl of the bolster, by which the pieces L L and KK might be brought together and the easy motion of the trucks prevented, can be corrected, and, by removing the bolts T T and the bolts passing through the iioor-bean1s R R R R, the bolster can be easily taken from the car-frame for any repair.
We do not claim as our invention theuse of the pieces A,IB, and C, the hearing-pieces E E, the tensonrods NN', or the connecting-pieces D D, taken separately; nor do we claim the principle of using the trusses .A and O to transfer the weight of the car to points on or near the turning-plate G, as all these parts and this principle have been before used; but what we do claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The clamping-pieces F F, constructed in the manner and for the purpose herein specified. 2. The combination of the rods O O, with nuts g g g g thereon, and the clamping-pieces F F. in the manner and for the purpose specified. Y
3. The arrangement and combination of the clamping-pieces F F, and rods O O, as elaimedin second claim, with the pieces A, B, and C, and eonnectingpieces D D, the whole forming an adjustable bolster, in the manner and for the purpose herein specified. I l
AS. evidence that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands in presence oi' two witnesses. JOHN MARQUIS, J. W. KIMMELL.
Witnesses:
P. B. YOUNG, WM. W. BARNETT.
