REINI-IOLD KLATT, OF STRONG CITY, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS M. BRODERIOK, OF SAME PLACE.
WHIFFLETREE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,757, dated May 1, 1900.
Application filed February 2, 1900. Serial No. 3,715. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REINHOLD KLATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Strong Oity, in the county of Chase and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Vhiftletrce Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
One purpose of the invention is to provide means for preventing the reins falling beneath the singletrees, the invention being particularly adapted for use in connection with pairs or -teams of horses; and a further object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the action of the singletrees may be controlled relatively to the guard-bar employed for the purpose described. Another purpose of the invention is to hold the singletree in its proper position, preventing it tipping up or downin the event the bolts holding the singletree to the doubletree become loose, as they often do.
A further purpose of the invention is to prevcnt the cutting or chating of the doubletree by the singletree ends and tugs or traces. The device also serves as a stay-strap, substituting the leather strap commonly used over the center of the inside halt of a singletree.
The device, in addition to being a rein-protector, constitutes a guard for the singletree through the mechanism ot' a metal base-plate used in connection with the device.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination ot the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved device, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Y
A represents the pole, and B the doubletree, which is pivoted to the pole by means of a bolt 10, passed through a bracket 1l, which is carried in direction of the heel of the pole. The singletrees 12 are att-ached to the doubletree in the usual manner. A sleeve 1-1: is provided for the inner end of each sin gletree, the
said sleeves being of such dimensions that the singletrees may move freely therein. These sleeves 14: are pivotally connected by a guardrod 15, which is arched, preferably, in an upward and forward direction and prevents the 5 5 reins or the tails of the horses from becoming entangled with the singletrees or with the traces.
In order that the movement of the singletrees and the guard-rod shall be perfectly 6o equalized, a base-plate 16 is provided, and the pivot-bolt 10 of the doubletree is passed through the central portion of the said baseplate. This base-plate in its normal position lies longitudinally7 upon the Lipper face of the 65 doubletree B, with its front and rear longitudinal edges facing, respectively, forwardly and rearwardly, and the ends of the baseplate 16 are pivotally attached to the bottom portions of the sleeves 14.
Vith this attachment the singletrees are allowed the desired freedom of movement and the reins andthe tails of the horses are prevented from falling down between and beneath the singletrees, and the singletrees are effectually guided in their necessary movements Without any strain being brought to bear upon the guard-rod.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 8o Patent- 1. The combination, with sin gletrees andA means on which they are mounted, of a bar pivotally mounted on the said means and having its ends respectively in slidable connection with the adjacent vends of the singletrees.
2. The combination, with singletrees and means on which they are mounted, of a bar serving as a rein-guard, the bar being pivot- 9o ally mounted on said means and having its ends respectively in slidable connection with the adjacent ends of the singletrees.
3. The combination, with a doubletree and singletrees mounted thereon, of a guard pivotaliy mounted coincident with the pivot of the doubletree, and having its ends respectively in sliding connection with the adjacent ends of the singletrees.
4. The combination, with a doubletree and :oo singletrees mounted thereon, of a guard-bar s arched in an upwardly and forwardly direction and having its ends pivotally connected with sleeves mounted to slide upon the inner ends of the singletrees mounted upon the doubletree, and a base-plete pivoted upon the doubletree, the ends of the said base-plate being pivotzrlly attached to the under portions of the said sleeves, as described.
. In testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo Subscribing Witnesses.
REINI-IOLD KLATT. Witnesses:
