UNITED STATES PATENT rrion.
JOHN BUTLER, OF GAZA, IOWVA.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,129, dated October 15, 1889.
Application filed August 14, 1889. Serial No. 320,675. (No model.)
Toall whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gaza, in the county of OBrien and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Draft-Equalizer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft-equalizers; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved draft-equalizer. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in a diiferent position. Fig. 3 is an edge View of the same.
Referring to the drawings by letter,A designates the main evener-bar, which is secured to the front end of a plow beam or tongue or the pole of. a harvester, and has a stirrup B pivoted to one end, in which the lever G is secured, and to the end of the longer arm of this leverI secure a singletree D by the links E. To the end of the shorter arm of this lever I pivot the angle-irons E, and between the front ends of these angle-irons I pivot a doubletree G, to the ends of which I secure the singletrees H. Between these angle-irons at bends of the same I pivot one end of the evener-bar I, which extends along the front of the lever 0 and a short distance therefrom and has a singletree J at its free end. This evener-bar I is connected with the main evener-bar A by the inclined braces or supporting-bars K.
The construction and arrangement of the several parts of my device being thus made known, the operation and advantages of the same it is thought will be readily understood. It will be observed that three of the horses will draw from the lever C, while the fourth horse draws from the evener-bar I. Should the single horse forge ahead, he will draw the horses harnessed to the whiffletrees H rearward, and the motion thus given to the evener-bar I will be imparted through the lever C and its connections to the whiffietree D, and the draft thus equalized, so that all the horses will be made to perform the same amount of work.
The device is very simple in its arrangement and is composed of very few parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of the main evener-bar A, the lever O, secured thereto and having a single whiflietree at one end and a pair of whiffletrees at the other end, the evener-bar I, carrying a single whiffietree and connected with the pair of whifiletrees, and connections between said evener-bars and the main evener-bar A, as set forth.
2. The improved draft-equalizer consisting of the main evener-bar A, the lever O, secured thereto, the angle-irons F at one end of the said lever, a pair of whiffletrees connected to the angle-irons and a single whiffletree connected to the end of the lever, the evener-bar I, secured to and extending from the angleirons, and the braces extending between the evener-bars A and I, as set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BUTLER.
