Be it known that I, JULIUS GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Falls Church, in the county of Fairfax and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Adj nstable Scraper for Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in adjustable scrapers for brooms.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of scrapers forbroomheads and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one adapted to be readily applied to the head of a broom and capable of being readily transferred from .one side of the same to the other side thereof to permit the broom-head to be reversed when one side has become worn, so that the unworn sidev may be brought into use.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a broom provided with a scraper constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken through one of the upper fastening devices. Fig. 4is aperspective view of the scraper detached.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates a broom-head provided with a pair of oppositely-inclined sockets 2, adapted to receive a handle 3 and capable of enabling the same to be readily changed from one side to the other, whereby the broomhead may be reversed after the front side has become worn to bring the unworn side in position for use. The broom is provided with an inclined scraper 4, extending from the front corner of the head upward and outward at an inclination and adapted to be detached and arranged at the opposite side of the head when the latter is reversed for the purpose before set forth.

The scraper consists of a plate or sheet of metal provided at opposite sides of the center with transverse slits extending from the inner edge of the metal, and the partiallysevered portions are bent in opposite directions at right angles to provide an upper pair of end flanges 5 and a depending central flange 6. The upper end flanges, which are arranged upon the upper face of the broomhead, extend beyond the center of the latter and are provided at their edges with centrallyarranged Tshaped slots 7,forming transverse entrance branches and inner longitudinal branches and adapted to receive centrallyarranged fastening devices 8, consisting of headed screws or bolts. The fastening doviees are preferably provided with rectangular headsadapted to be engaged by a wrench or othersuitable tool, and a washer 8 is interposed between the heads of the fastening devices and the end flanges.

The depending flange is provided with a central T-shaped slot 9, adapted to receive a fastening device 10, arranged at the center at the outer side of the broom -head, which is provided at each side with an opening 11 for the reception of the fastening device, so that the latter may be readily transferred from one'side of the broom-head to the other; but instead of employing only one fastening device at the side of the broom-head a fastening device may be arranged at each side, so that none of the fastening devices need be removed in changing the scraper from one side of the head to the other.

When it is desired to reverse the broomhead, the handle is changed from one side to the other and the fastening device at the front side is removed. The top fastening devices are simply loosened, as the end flanges may be disengaged from such fastening devices by simply sliding the scraper longitudinally to bring the fastening devices opposite the transverse entrance branches and then drawing it outward. The end flanges are engaged with the fastening devices by a reverse operation, it being moved inward transversely of the broom-head to engage the fastening devices with the entrance branches, and then by sliding the scraper longitudinally in either direction the fastening devices are brought into the longitudinal branches. The fastening devices are then tightened. The T-shaped slot of the depending flange enables the latterto be engaged with the side fastening device siinultaneously with the interlocking operation of the end flanges.

It will be seen that the broom-head may be readily reversed When one side has become Worn to present a fresh side for use and that the scraper may be readily transferred from one side of the broom-head to the other Without disengagingthe fastening devices from the broom-head. It will also be apparent that the scraper is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it'is strong and-durable, and that it may be readily applied to a broom-head.

Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction Within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacri- .ficing any of the advantages of this invention.

\Vhat is claimed is 1. The combination with a broom-head provided with oppositely-disposed sockets ad apted to enable a handle to be transferred from one side of the broom-head to the other to reverse the said broom-head When one side becomes worn, of fastening devices mounted on the broom-head at the top and side thereof, and a scraper provided With integral flanges arranged at an angle to each other and adapted to embrace the top and front faces of the said broom-head, said flanges bein g provided with slots having transverse entrance branches and inner longitudinal branches adapted to permit the fastening devices to 'be engaged With the flanges without removing them from the broom-head, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a reversible broomhead provided With a removable handle and oppositely-disposed sockets adapted to enable the handle to be transferred from one side of the broom-head to the other to reverse the said broom-head When one side becomes worn, of fastening devices mounted on the broomhead at the top and side thereof, and a scraper provided with integral flanges arranged at an angle to each other and adapted to embrace the top and front faces of the said broom-head, said flanges being provided with slots extending inward from the edges of the flangesand arranged to receive the fastening devices and adapted to permit the scraper to be placed in position on the head and removed therefrom without removing the said fastening devices, substantially as described.
