p TO ALL WHOM- IT MAYCON CERN Be it known that I, SYLVESTER J., WRIGHT, of Ellsworth, inthe county of St. Lawrence, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Opening Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in Vthe art to 'make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved gate taken through the line x 9;, fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken through the line z e, iig. l.
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken through the line y y, lig. l.

vMy invention has for its object to furnish an improved gate so constructed and arranged as to be opened by the weight of. theadvancing man, horse, or team, and to close itself as soon asv the cause of its opening has passed through; and it consists in the combination of the rollers, flexible straps, springs, lever-arms, and cords or chains, with each other, with the stationary frame, movable platform and gates, and in the combination of the coiled wire springs, or their equivalent, with the gate, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a box set in the ground. The box A should be vof such` a depth as to allow the necessary play to the rollers, C, and their attachments, and of such a length tllat the man, horse, or teamL by the weight of which the gate is opened, may have space to enter upon the platform B to operate the gate and yet be outof the way of the swing of said gate, C are rollers, the ends ofl which are pivoted to the ends of the box A, as shown in iig. l. To the sidesof the rollers C, at their ends, are attached the ends of leather or other flexible straps, D, the other ends of' which are attached to the lower ends of the downwardly-projecting arms Z2 of thel platform B, so that as the said platform is forced down the straps I) may revolve the rollers O in such a direction as to cause the lever-arms E, attached to said rollers, to swing inward. F is a rope or chain, one of the ends of which is attached to the end of the arm E, and which passes thence over the guidapulleys G, and its other end is attached to the gate H, so that as the rollers C are revolved by the depression of the platform B, the gate will be swung open and held so until the platform is again raised. I are flexible straps, one of the ends of which is attached to the sides of the rollers C, and the other ends of which are attached to the frame of the platform B, so that as the platform B is released from the depressing weight and rises, the rollers C ymay be revolved back te their former position. J are springssecured to the box A at one or both ends of said box, in such a position that it may be depressed by forcing the platform I3` downward, so that ii, by its elasticity may raise the platform B, as soon as the downward pressure is removed, to its former position, and hold it there until again depressed to again open the gate. K are stops placed in the .lower part of the box A, to receive and sustain the weight of the platform B and whatsoever weight may be upon it, as soon as the said platform has been forced down a sullicient distance to open the gate. L are coiled wire springs which are coiled around the pivoting bar of the gate H, one end oi' said springs being attached to the said gate, and the other end to the frame of the box A, or to the gate-post M.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the rollers C, flexible straps D and I, spring or springs J, lever-arm E, and rope or Achain F, with each other, with the stationary frame or box A, movable frame or platform B, and gate H, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
` 2. The combination of the coiled wire pring L, or equivalent, with the gate H, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. 4 l
SYLVESTER J. WRIGHT.
