Description
J. J. BROWN 1 Thin-Coupling. No 64,067. "Patented Apr'. 23, 1867.
N.FE\'ERS. PHOTO-L YHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON 11c.
, goiter; tatre gatmt ffi JAMES ,J.. BROWN, 70F MADISON, WISCONSIN:
LcHcr-SPatent No. 64,067, dated inn-z; 1861.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE THILL-OOUPLING TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. BROWN, of Madison, in the county of Dane, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Thin-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this-specification, and to the letters at reference marked thereon, like letters indicating lilac parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skiliedin the art to construct and usothc invention 1 will proceed to describe it.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the part embracing my present improvement, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same with the clip and thill-irou attached, complete and ready for use.
In my improved thill-clip, as recently patented, the socket was formed between the front curved part 0f thciron A and thcf'ront bar of the clip 1'), and consequently the thill-iron could not befitted to the other parts until the clip or band I) was made and applied; and as these bands have to bc made of various sizes to fit the various-sized axles to which they are to be applied, it follows that they cannot be completed and ;put into the market ready for use without making as many varieties as there are sizes to be used. My present improvement has for its object the remedying of this difficulty, and the construction of acoupling, to which the thill-iron and packing can he fitted and put into the market complete, to which any-sized clip can afterwards he applied, and thus the apparatus be made to fit any-sized axle. To accomplish this object I construct the bar A, as shown in fig. 1; that is to say-,1 make that portion of the bar that is to fit under the axle and receive the ends of the clip straight, in the usual manner, and either make the holes in it to receive the ends of the clip 1) or leave it solid for the holes to he made suhseque'n tly as desired. I then forge solid with this bar A a vertical arm, B, as shown in fig. 1, the front end of the bar A being extended forward and curved upward, as shown, thus forming the socket for the reception of the packing a between this front curved end and the Vertical arm B. The object of the vertical arm B is to form asupport for attaching the buttongC independent of the clip or band D, instead of attaching it to the clip or band itself. as was formerly done. C represents a button, pivoted at its upper end to the vertical arm 13 so as to swing sidewise through the notch n of the cheek E of the thill-iron, which latter is made as described in my former patent, A packing of rubber or leather, as represented by a, is placed in the socket so as to surround the belt that serves to attach the thill-iron to the bar A, the bolt being dropped in from above, after Which'a piece of packing, c, is placed on the bolt and held down tight by the lower end of the button C as the latter is swung into place through the notch 41. In this manner I am enabled to construct n. coupling that can be all fitted and put in the market, ready for use, by applying a clip or band D of proper size'toifit the axle. In fig. 2 the parts are shown all put together with the clip D attached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is-- l. The bar A provided with the vertical arm B, for attaching the button independent of the clip-or band, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
2. I claim making the socket for the reception of the packing and bolt between the front side of arm B and the front curved end of A, as shown and described.-
JAMES J. BROWN.
