SPECIFIGATXON forming part of Letters :Patent No. 640,471, dated January' 2, 1900.
application lcd February 25,1899. S01fLlN0706,790. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, HARRY U. KISTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Selins Grove, in the county ot Snyder, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in SauHSets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a novel eonstruction of saw-set by means of which several teeth of a saw-blade can be mechanically and accurately set at one time, provision being made forgrippingand holding the saw firmly during the act of setting and for operating the setting and gripping devices practically simultaneously and by a com mon operating lever or handle.
It further consists of a novel construction for locking the gripping devices during the setting operation and for automatically releasing the saine and for the adjustment of certain parts for accommodating saw-blades of ditterent thickness or having di lterentsized teeth.
The invention Afurther consists of novel details ot construction, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section, on the line a: of Fig. 3 of a saiwset embodying my invention and in readiness to be applied to a saw. Fig. 2represents a side elevation. Fig. E3 represents a top plan. Fig. 4 represents a fragmentary vertical section on line y y, Figs. 3 and 5. Fig. 5 represents an end elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 4t. Fig. 6 represents a top plan ot the parts shown in Fig. d. Fig. 7 represents an end elevation ot the setting-punches.
Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the gures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a saw-set, the same consisting of a body B, having a handle C, by which the device is manipulated in connection with the lever D. The said body B is bit'urcated or provided with the side blades 10, between which the lever D is pivoted at the point 11. The body B is provided with a stationary gripping-j aw 12 and movable gripping-jaw 13. The sawblade is held between these jaws while the teeth are being set, and the upper ends are beveled to form anvils, against which the teeth are pressed by the punches. The stationary jaw 12 is adjustable to accommodate saw-blades of different thickness, so that the teeth can be accurately set, and to secure this adjustability the face 1-1 of the jaw consists of an upright plate carried by shank 15, suitably guided by a rib or groove on the bottom of the body B. The shank is secured in its adjusted position by the thumbscrew 16, and to secure a tine adjustment a set-screw 17 is set in the body in the rear ot the shank and presses against the rear end thereof. The movable jaw 13 is carried by a shank 18 between side plates or biturcated portion of the bodyand held in place by a pin 19, secured to said side plates or the bifurcated portion, and passes through a slot 20 in said shank 18. The outer end of the shank 1S is pivoted to the lower end of a lever 2l, the same being fulcrumed between the ears 22 upon the body. The upper end of the lever 21 is connected with the lever or knuckle 23 by means of a link 2li. The said lever or knuckle 23 is situated at the upper rear portions ot the body and between the side plates 10, and the connection between the link 24 and the lever 21 embraces a lost motion, being attained by a slot in said link. A spring 25 bears against a pin 2G upon the link 24 and against the side of the lever 21 and normally holds the parts in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, although said spring makes the device adjustable automatically to accommodate saw-blades of different thickness and also to effect the locking of the gripping devices. The upper end 27 of the lever D is situated within the crotch of the lever or knuckle 23 and serves to throw the gripping devices in operative position when the lever D is turned on its fulcrum. The spring 28 holds the handle D normally in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and after the device has been operated this spring serves to retract the punches and also to unlock the gripping devices, as fully described hereinafter, while thescrew 29 regulates the closing of the handle or lever D.
The settingpunches 30 and 31 are retained by suitable guides 32 and 3S and move toward the anvils or beveled portions on the upper ends of the jaws 12 and 13. The rear punch 30 is pivotally connected with the arm 27 ol.
IOO
the lever D, .While the punch 31 is pivoted upon the end of a link 34, that is pivoted to the lever D on the other side ot' its fulcrum. The pivotal connection between the punch 3l and link 34 conveniently comprises an upright collar 35 on the end of the arm within which a pin 36 on the punch 31 is swiveled. This pivot connection permits the lateral adj ustment of the forward setting-punch 31 to vary the distances between the punches, so as to operate upon different-sized teeth. The punch 31 rests upon and is carried by a frame comprising two fingers 37, movable in guideopenings in the side plates of the body and connected together at one end by the plate l33. The fingers 37 are notched, as shown at 39, to receive the punch 3l, it being noted that the guide 33 holds the punch in place therein. The frame and punch are moved laterally by means of a set-screw 40, swiveled --to the plate 38 and having a threaded engagement with the body D.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the side of the device is provided with a gage 41, consisting of a plate having one end secured to the body B by a screw 42 or otherwise, while its other end is free and overlaps the upper ends or anvils of the jaws. The rear end of said plate 41 is slotted, as shown at 43, to permit its free end to` be swung over and away vfrom the upper ends of the jaws, it being noted that said plate is further secured by a setscrew 43X, having the screw connection with a side plate of a body and a swivel connection with the plate 41, whereby the latter can be moved laterally relative to the body.
Upon the rear end of the shank 15 is a jaw or face 44, situated opposite the jaw or face 45 of the body, and at the upper end of said jaws or faces 44 and 45 is a s ocket 46, in which a ile can be reciprocated, it being understood that the set-screw 17 is withdrawn from the opening'hetween the jaws 44 and 45 when this part of the device is in use. To limit the throw of the knuckle, its rear finger is provided with laterally-extending stops or projections 47, that engage the side plates 10 of the body when the gripping-jaws are locked.
The operation is as follows: The forward punch 31 is irst adjusted laterally, according to the size of the teeth of'the saw-blade, while the gage-plate 41 is also adj usted laterally, so that when it engages a tooth of the saw-blade the punches 30 and 3l are situated opposite the teethto 4be set. The jaw 12 is then ady justed, if necessary, relative to the throw of the punches, so that the teeth will be accurately set on opposite sides of the saw-blade. The parts are then in position. (Best seen in Figs.1, 2, and 4.) The saw-blade 48 is inserted, as shown, and when the handle C and the lever D are brought together the arm 27 of the latter engages one finger of the knuckle 23 and moves the gripping-jaw 13 into contact with the saw-blade. Owing to the relative arrangement of the pivotal connection between the arms 30 and 34 with the lever D and the arrangement of the knuckle 23 the gripping-jaw 13 is moved into operative position before the punches 30 and 31 are moved to an appreciable extent. The knuckle 23 and connected parts are thereby moved to positions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and locked in this position, since the pivot between the link 24 and the knuckle 23 is thrown to the opposite side of a line extending between the fulcrum with lthe knuckle and the pivot between t-he link and the lever 21. The yielding connection between the link and the lever 21 and the spring 25 permits such throw and the consequent locking of the gripping mechanism, as is evident. The gripping mechanism is thus locked and the lever D moves farther to reciprocate the punches 30 and 31, which engage the teeth of the sawblade, setting them accurately and at a correct angle, as understood. When the lever D is released, the spring 28 throws it to its normal position to retract the punches 30 and 31 and also to unlock the gripping-jaws 12 l and 13 by reason of the contact of the upper end of the army 27 of said lever D with the other linger of the knuckle, the parts then assuming the position as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The set-screw 29 obviously limits the movement of the lever D.
Vhen the device is used as a saw-jointer, the set-screw 17 is retracted to permit the insertion of the saw-blade, while a suitable file can be manipulated within the socket or slot 46.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
