MACHINE FOR FILING SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,739, dated October 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. DUNN, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Filing Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a machine for filing saws; and it consists in parts and combination of parts, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, in projection, of a device constructed according to my invention. Fig.2 is a detached longitudinal vertical sectional view of a portion of my device, showing the mechanism by which the file-frame is kept and operated at any desired angle. Fig.3 is a detached view of the toothmeasuring device. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the machine.
In the said drawings, Arepresents the clamp between which the saw is held during the operation of filing. This may be of any form or shape adapted to receive and retain the saw B.
O 0 represent the frame or support of my device adapted to embrace the clamps A, and move longitudinally thereon.
D is a vertical shaft adapted to turn readily in the head or frame 0, and supporting and carrying the file-frame E.
F is a spring, adapted to bear upon the frame 0, and at its center permanently attached to the shaft D. WVhen free it supports the shaft D, and with it the file-frame E. When the file-frame is in use and weight is applied to the frame E, sufficient to operate the file upon the saw B, the spring F, at its center, is can ried down with the shaft D. WVhen the operation ceases and the power is removed from the frame E the spring F, being released, returns to its position, as shown in Fig. 1, carrying with it the shaft D and file-frame E.
For regulating the depth of cut a thread is out upon the upper end of the shaft D, and a thumb-nut, G, adapted to engage with the thread, placed thereon. By means of this screw and its thumb-nut G the depth of cut of the file can be regulated. When pressure is applied to the spring F the thumb-nut G is depressed until it comes into contact with the dial H.
K is a lever pivoted at K to the frame 0, or to a second lever projecting from and at tached to the frame 0, and provided at one end with a set-screw, K and at the other end with a gage or measuring device, K and also at its lower extremity with a pin, K adapted to engage the clamp A. The object of this portion of my invention is to enable an unskilled operator to file all the teeth of a saw exactly alike and make them of equal size.
The operation of my device is as follows: The ordinary saw-clamp A, clasping the saw to be filed, is placed in any suitable retaining device, as an ordinary vise. The machine is then placed upon the clamp. The pin K is pressed into the clamp A, thus affording a fulcrum for the lever K to swing upon from its lower end. By means of the gage or measure K Fig. 3, the width of a tooth or its throat can readily be ascertained, as said gage lies closely adjacent to the saw. It will be seen that if the pin K is pressed into the stationary clamp A, and then the frame 0 drawn in a direction away from the lever K, the lower end of said lever will be held stationary, and it will be pulled upon by the frame from its connection therewith at K. This will cause the lever K to swing upon its pin K until arrested at its upper end by the set-screw K coming into contact with the frame 0. Now, the set-screw K is so adjusted that when the frame 0 is moved from it a distance corresponding relatively to the width of a tooth or its throat, it will be arrested by reason of the stationary engagement between the pin K and the clamp A and the contact of the setscrew K with the frame 0. The parts must be so fixed and adjusted that the stopping or arrest of the frame will occur at a point where a file, E when it is brought down, will come into a throat to be operated upon. When ready to file the next throat or tooth the pin K is disengaged, and the lower end of the lever K moved toward the frame 0 a proper distance (measured at K to correspond with the width of a tooth, and then again pressed down into the clamp A; and now, when the frame (J is drawn in a direction away from the lever K, it can only move the distance determined by the adjustment of the set-screw K and when said set-screw and frame 0 come into contact this frame will be located at a point over the saw where the file should be pressed down again to its work.
The depth of the cut of the tooth is regulated by adjusting the thumb-nut Gr upon the vertical shaft D. The angle or bevel upon which it is desired the saw shall be filed having been determined, the machine is set by causing the pointer H to be moved to the dc sired angle indicated on the dial H. The frame is then held in position by fixing the setscrew J. The machine being new adjusted for width of tooth, depth of tooth, and bevel, the operation of filing may be commenced. This is performed by pressing upon the spring F until the file E comes in contact with the saw B, when the file-frame E is worked backward and forward by means ofthe handle E, the
pressure upon the spring F being continued until the thumb-nut Gr rests upon the dial H and the file ceases to cut. This operation is continued until all the teeth of the saw are filed, when it will be found that each tooth is cut to the same size, depth, and bevel, an operation that is impossible to accomplish by the eye and hand alone.
WVhat I claim is 1. In a saw-filing machine, the combination, with the frame 0, of the adjusting-lever K, provided with pin K and set-screw K said adjusting-lever being connected with frame 0 by means of a link, substantially as set forth.
2. In a saw-filing machine, the combination, with the frame 0, of the adjusting-lever K, provided with pin K, set-screw K and pivoted gage K substantially as set forth.
